Sony A1

Got a text tonight from a long time acquaintance who is into photography and mainly shooting birds. He is kicking the tires on a Sony A1 mirrorless. Checked B&H for price and availability....GOOD GRIEF! Not sure I could afford just the body, let alone a lens or two or three? If I sold off my D850 and D7100 and the couple of FX Nikon lenses I have, not sure I would have enough to get that Sony let alone hang a lens on it? Just an observation on my part. I know my CFO would disown me if she found out I got one of those. She was sweet enough to help me get my D850; she let me have $1000 toward its price. I presume my acquaintance is drooling over Sony's 30 fps rate as noted in the specs section on B&H's site. I guess that would be cool to photograph dragonflies in flight? Or bob white quail when a bird dog busts a covey? In the meantime I will continue to use my Nikons and track my moving subjects with the skills I learned while shooting trap and sporting clays.

The Sony A1 is putting a lot of $$ into my bank account. Sold my A7RIV, Canon R5, Canon 100-500, Canon 1.4TC and soon to sell A9II. A1 does it all. Z9 should be something similar with a similar price tag. Next up is selling my 300PF and 500PF. I'm going to be rich!!

To be honest the 30FPS spec is the one I cared least about with this new release. I have a few subjects like swallows IF and other small passerines IF that I can use it on. However, most of the time I shoot my A1 at 15FPS.

To really understand the A1 you have to first understand the advantages of a stacked sensor. The A9 showed what was possible back in 2017. Now the A1 can do that at 50MPs. The Nikon Z9 will follow suit. Canon better have that global shutter R1 ready or they will be left behind. After shooting fast action with a stacked sensor allowing a live feed while actively firing shots it is impossible to go back to shooting anything else be it top end DSLRs or other MILCs.

Yup! I bought the a1 and 200-600 to try Sony as I am sure you have read on the many threads going around. I intended to keep the D850 and some of the shorter lenses and if I like the Sony (which I already do!) I will buy the Sony 600f4 in about 60 days. Well now that I have taken the a1 out a few times I see me selling all the Nikon gear I have this summer and replacing with Sony. It is that good! I need the 600f4, 12-24f2.8, 90 macro and I am mostly good. I use the comparable Nikon lenses the most and the 70-200, 24-70 hardly ever get used so in no hurry to buy those replacements. Pick up a second a1 later this year or see what the a9III later this looks like and I am done.

Done for at lest a year - you know SONY already has the A1 II in a mock up.:):)

Well, I'm keeping my Nikon Z7II, 300 and 500 PFs. BUT I just bought a used A9II and the 200-600. Just could not cope with the Nikon Z7II for action. But not willing to part with the two PFs, otherwise would have gone for the A1. That said, will wait to see what Z9 is like. If it's as good as the A1, I'll sell A9II, Z7II, and 200-600 which will help finance the
Z9. With the Z9 if it's an A1 counterpart and the two PFs, I would be a very happy camper.

I agree with you on those PFs - they are tough to part with once you get used to them!

You only live once!

If the Z9 is around the same price as the A1 and performs well this could be the way to go for me!
It's not really any more expensive than my hobbies when I was younger. Motocross, snowboarding, golf $$$

Just for fun....149 consecutive frames at 30FPS put into a .gif

I think frame 97 is out of focus... just kidding, this definitely opens up a new era for wildlife photography.
But it also gave me an epiphany. Technology is fixing and addressing the technical challenges of photography, so I'd better sharpen my skills on the artistic side and slow way down to get there :)

Selling your 500 PF? Let me know what you have in mind.

FWIW Bird Eye AF is a game-changer, and totally silent blackout-free shutter with negligible rolling shutter effect is a game changer. Never say never, but I doubt I'll ever use the 30 frames/sec speed. A few examples:

Agree - I've been shooting the a1 a but more and it really is a game-changing camera. The eye AF is particularly handy, allowing me to focus on composition and not scooting an AF point to an eye.

I really like your Yellow-billed Magpie photo... blacks and whites both show nice feather detail. Hmm, I could get the Sony a1 and 600 GM if I sold my house. Do you live in the Sacramento/San Joaquin valley... the only place you find YB Magpie. I'm from there but now in Oregon and we have only the Black-billed Magpie.
