Lens hood for Nikon 500mm PF

I haven’t taken mine off that much, so I just tried it. I would say that it takes a firm effort, but not anything to where I think I’m about to break anything. Would rather have it like this as opposed to my 200-500 where I’m afraid the hood is about to fall off at times.

Yes the Lens Hood on the 500 PF is a little tight, but I push in the release button with my thumb and with my fingers inside the Hood it comes off easier than trying to grip the Hood from the outside. My 200 -500 Hood is too loose, just slightly bump that Hood and it falls off. I generally leave the 500 PF Hood attached.

Align the marks and it goes on fine. Some hoods will go on in a few positions but this one seems a bit more particular. As others have said, firmer than some other hoods (esp the 200-500).

I'm with Warren and Snapshot. It's pretty tight and usually takes a gripping with fingers inside the hood along with the button press to release it but it's storing it in the reverse position that is harder and usually takes a few tries to engage even when carefully lining up the markings. The good news is that I usually leave the hood mounted as it fits in my photo pack that way.

The 500PF lens hood was driving me nuts since new. Just today I cleaned both hood and lens mating surfaces with a lens cleaning wipe and used a silicone lube spray onto a cotton tip and carefully applied to both mating surfaces and grooves. Works fine now but I think this is a tolerance issue so may need the process frequently.

Hood on my 500 PF is snug but not difficult to attach/remove at all. Align release button with the index mark on top front of lens barrel and rotate hood CCW until it clicks - push release button and rotate hood CW to remove.

Good to know information as I’m planning to buy a 500pf soon. I have the same problem with my 200-500 hood. I use gaffer tape to keep it in place.

I guess my opinion is in the minority here. I thought the lens hood design on the 200-500 zoom was/is bad, with the hood coming off at inopportune times (I ended up buying a second one after the first one took a bad tumble). The hood on the 500 PF goes on firmly, locks, and stays on until you push the release button to take it off. I have a Lenscoat on the lens with the seam of the hood piece aligned with the release button. Works great!

I just got a used 500mm pf and right away noticed that the lens hood was pretty tight and kind of a pain. I couldn't get it off today with gloves on, and had to take them off to get better purchase on the slick surface of the hood. I know a lot of people dislike the hood on the 200-500, but to me it worked just fine. I'm sure I'll get used to it with time, though.

I love the hood on the 500PF. Hard to take off? Yes thank goodness. I've retraced my steps many times to find the hoods when they've fallen off of both the 200-500 and 80-400. Glad Nikon finally figured it out.

Hoods can be a bit like filters, grab them too hard and they distort slightly making them difficult to turn.
That‘s what I’ve found with mine. I don’t have too much trouble getting off, but it is difficult to get on. You have to make sure everything is lined just right , if not I can see how it can get jammed and won’t come off. I almost never take mine off because of the difficulty of getting it aligned just right when putting it on. Last time I put it on , I place a small of silicone grease on the threaded area. Hopefully that will help.

More like, Glad the cheap plastic gets jammed together on there and won't come off....lol

My Sony 200-600 has fallen off a couple times without me noticing. I should probably start taping it on there.
It only gets jammed if you don't pay attention and get it cross threaded. Like any properly sized threaded fitting. The ones that fall off are the cheap, poorly designed ones.
