My first photo post for Back Country Gallery.
Echidna on a mission to find termites.
Echidnas and Platypus are the only two egg laying mammals in the world. Their group is called Monotremes which include 3 types of Echidna and the Platypus.
This Echidna was on the march looking for a termite mound to get his next meal. Interestingly, he swam across a small lagoon to get to the other side, maybe swimming about 100mts. I was absolutely surprised they could swim so well and it was behaviour I never knew they did. Anyway, he got to the sand between the ocean and the lagoon and then still had to swim again across the small channel of water that connected the lagoon to the sea.
An amazing experience for me to see this behaviour.
He became a little used to me and so I go down on the sand and took this shot, which I am VERY pleased with.
