Wide Angle S series for my pre ordered Z9

It’s actually a composite of two photos. The moon was with the 200-500 f/5.6 and the palm tree is with the 24-70 f/4. Both taken on the same night about 2-3 minutes apart, about as long as it took to change over the gear. I lit the palms with a much reduced power SB700. That areca palm is right outside my lanai and impossible to get back far enough to frame at 500mm. I was taking our dog out that night and saw the moon in the palm tree. I tried with the 200-500 but couldn’t get it one shot so I took the moon shot first, and then changed lenses and took the palm shot. In the palm shot, the moon is in the same place, but a much smaller white ball. It was just one of those, “I see something” moments, and I had a lot of fun making it all come together.

My experience: Had the 14-24 for about a dozen years, and for architectural/city shots it couldn't be beat. I replaced it with the S version and it is even better. The 14-30 is more than adequate, although some older reviews I saw showed a little more distortion than the 14-24 S on lens correction, and it gives up a stop. I already have big filters from using the old lens with a Lee adapter set. If money is a factor, or you are shooting few linear shots, and don't need the extra stop, the less expensive lens would work fine.

I seldom use a wide angle in fact after selling Tamron 15-30 and 18-400 my widest right now is Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2 so not sure the extra $1,100 is worth it.

It depends on use.
The 14-24mm is much better at Astro photography. Fast and really sharp to the corners.
Otherwise for everything else the 14-30mm Z lens is awesome - easily outperforming your Tamron 15-30mm.
I tried the 15-30mm tamron but had a bad copy or two and went back to my 14-24mm G Nikkor.
Either lens is great - I chose the 14-24mm only because I like fast glass.🦘

I have frequently liked fast glass since I shoot wildlife in low light. I ordered the 14-30 f/4 ... since I do not do Astro and will only use this a few times in a year the extra $ just did not add up will save it for fast glass that I will use much more. Right now only have the D850, sold the D6 and D500 the day the Z9 release and Steve commented that he wished he had sold his D6 sooner ... I immediately got an online quote from B&H it was better than I expected so I jumped on it. I shoot birds and other wildlfie 90% of the time so my lens budget get directed to long focal length lenses. DSLR favorite is 600mm f/4 E. Next Nikon 500 PF and if variable focal lenght either Tamron 150-600 G2. My medium focal length choices have been Tamron 100-400 my wifes favorite lens on her Z50 and a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 with a 1.4 TC.
