While we were in Yellowstone last May, I had only one photo op related to wildlife... a red dog that was only 1-2 hours old.

What's a "red dog"? It's a baby bison. Bison calves tend to be born from late March through May and are orange-red in color, earning them the nickname "red dogs." After a few months, their hair starts to change to dark brown and their characteristic shoulder hump and horns begin to grow.

#2 Still shaky on its legs.....

Karen, That’s a great series!👍👍👍

Awesome shots. Hard to believe this was the only wildlife you saw in YNP.

Joe
It was the first week of May. We were there a week. We got snow about 1/2 the time. Landscapes were great! Folks were out with spotting scopes rejoicing that they saw wolves out about a half mile or more. Not worth stopping for, IMHO. This was at least our 6th trip there and it's always yielded spectacular landscapes and very few wildlife shots. So the red dog was a real treat! I enjoyed just watching mom and calf......

@Butlerkid That is a wonderful series, a newborn just hours old struggling to keep its legs straight and the mother tending to it!! It is definitely a wonder to able to witness this. I assume it is the birth cord still visible on the mom and kid bison?? It really makes the image that much special!! Do correct me if I am wrong :) :)

Yes, that is the birth cord!!! We drove up this road and passed a small herd of buffalo with no little ones. 5-10 miles up the road was blocked off due to snow. We drove back down the road. This little guy was there! He had been born sometime after we had passed the first time. It was probably about 1 hour old.
