Steve - I guess that begs the question what do you use to check for photo's that are yours?
Mostly, it's when people tell me they see one of my images out there. I'm honestly too busy to spend time hunting for them. I think there are services that will do it for you though, not sure of the name though.

Not that I know of (I'm still learning the software too). I'll check and see if I can find anything.
I did run across this thing; its not a gallery but you can get a list of threads that a member started. If you click on a member then below their Messages count there's a Find pull down that allows you to find all threads started by that person. Like this:

Hi Charlie, the problem with the find option is you have to sift through it all, to find the photos. The gallery for each member would show only the photos uploaded by that member and most likely as small thumbnails. If someone wanted to see the full size, they would click on that photo.

Steve,
From time to time I create an image (composite) in order to tell a story; you've seen one in the Post Processing forum. Would it be proper to post a composite in the Wildlife, Landscape, or Nature forums if the image fit the criteria of the forum?

@Howard5252 I'm only speaking for myself, but I don't see a problem with it. No harm in posting one and see what the reaction is from fellow members. I really liked your fiddler in the cemetery (https://bcgforums.com/index.php?threads/music-forever.38/post-90) which was well received by those who commented, and if I had to make a critique on it as far as this forum is concerned, the focus was too much on the fiddler, not the "landscape" of the cemetery.

There's a place for everything and everything in its place. Get the balance right and go for it.

Thanks for your comment, I think I'll wait for Steve to weigh in on this one ... just in case. If you'd like to see what I have in mind, send me your e-mail and I'll show you. I'm at [email protected]

Everyone's art is different. Although I'm not one to composite, I know others enjoy it. I'd only ask that you do mention it's a composite when posting :)

Thank you. In the interest of full disclosure, I have already posted one composite. I have never called them photographs; I always use the word "Image" or I say nothing. Going forward, I'll be sure to mention that it is a composite. Going to post one now.

There was a discussion on this someplace else...Sorry can't remember where. The fact they anyone can take a screen shot kinda makes it a moot point if someone wants to get a copy they will.
Definitely true about taking a screen shot, but it's my understanding (limited as it is!) that much more can be done with a downloaded image vs a screen shot of that image, especially as regards making prints and enlargements. That’s just my thought on the subject.

I actually found a couple, but they use geolocation and it would show every member's location. I'm hesitate to install it due to privacy concerns since there would be no way to opt out. It wouldn't show member's names, but it still would freak people out. I'm still looking for a plug-in that uses the location the member input - that way, it's just using the info they are already freely sharing.
Thanks steve, I think you are on the right track.

Possibly - although I'm not quite sure how. In addition, the forum itself only displays 1200px wide (and that's the recommended size to upload as well). At 200 DPI, that's a 6" wide print. at the "standard 300 DPI, it's 4" wide. So, there's really not much anyone can do with the image sizes we have here.

The sad truth is there is literally nothing you can do to stop people getting your image. Even loading them at very low resolutions isn't much help now. Programs using Ai (Topaz Jpeg to Raw and others) are now able to reconstruct them with pretty good results. These reconstructed images may not make the printers, but are certainly good enough to use as backgrounds for your computer or putting on websites other than yours.

Some food for thought:
  • If you have a website, do you have any quality level images stored on it? I hope not and don't do it unless you are not worried about them. Low res only.
  • Most simple preventions are easily circumvented. eg. Disable right click - useless
  • Web surfing stores data on your PC. Tech savvy folks can recover that
  • Is your website secure? Tech savvy people can download your entire website within a very short space of time.
  • Your site is secure but how secure? Well, just ask some of the biggest corporations and government departments in the world who have spent mega $$$$. There is always someone out there smarter.
  • I could go on and on here, but you should get the picture.
  • Ask yourself how much your image is worth and how much time and expense is it worth in chasing it? Is it a "Mona Lisa", then yeah, definitely or is it something you may sell for a few hundred dollars, then a moral victory is most likely your best reward.

I agree to a point BUT with the software out there today, I don't necessarily agree with this. Take a screen shot of something run it though Gigapixel then denoise. It's frightening how nice you can make a screen shot look. Is it harder sure but if you have the right software, it's about 5 mouse clicks away from being whatever you want.

Hi Gordon and Steve,

https://www.pixsy.com/ (Find and fight image theft)
https://tineye.com/ does same as pixsy
Google has an image search too
I give my files away to people who ask about buying the photo. The only thing I ask of them is that they sent me a photo of my photo hanging on their wall; I have a few of those. Even on my website - the BUY option is turned off.

Hi Steve, one other thing I noticed. Photos that are posted can be downloaded by anyone. Any way off turning off this option?
Thanks

I think this could become complicated because "save graphics as ..." is a standard function in browsers and if you want to block it would be either a black and white solution or @Steve has to get special functions in the forum if download of pictures shall be selectively allowed per user or per photo., which I think would be ab it too much. You can't do anything against screenshots (as @gordon_g said) but if you upload your JPGs with copyright note in the IPTC/XMP data of the picture you've done all you can, and even this can easily be removed if somebody wants it.

Sorry @Steve, I haven't done this as my first thing here, but I also want to say thank you for this forum.
It became my favourite one in no time after joining, not only because of the obvious reasons looking at the photography topics but especially also looking at technical side. It is a pleasure to use it and I wished other forums would provide this level of user experience as well.

Hey Steve, Great work on the site. I want to thank you for your efforts here as well as YouTube. The format you use to convey your endless knowledge is top notch for sure.
I'm wondering what your thoughts are on having a thread dedicated to equipment related topics. Just a thought.

Just wondering how are reaction points earned. I can not find this information anywhere.
Honestly, I'm not sure either (I purchased the software, I didn't write it so there are a lot of things like that LOL). I think it has to do with the number and type of "likes" your posts get.

AFAIK you get a reaction point if someone likes what you post, but only once per threat. However if they respond to your thread, you don't get anything. If they reply to you message by hitting reply, you can get a reaction point but only once per thread. Is this consistent with what you have seen?

TBH, I haven't paid any attention to it. I should, but I have so many things going on at once I sometimes miss stuff.
