Topaz Giga Pixel AI question.

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I've used On1 Photo Resize for several years and then last year I got Giga Pixel AI. It seems to do a better job on some images but its a lot more processor intensive. Rendering the image takes much longer. Thats all fine and good most of the time. Since the last update though it will often get most of the way through processing (like 70%) and then crash. Has anyone else had this problem? I tried uninstall/reinstall and it still does it.

Oh, I'm using Mac OS, latest version, on a 2016 MacBook Pro.

Hi Chad,

You can only see EXIF info for this image if you are logged in.

You might try: File > Preferences Then select "Use recommended settings" this will have Gigapixel look at you machines HW and utilize GPU and memory better.

Thanks Bob! Your suggestion seems to have worked. I just resized two images and the program didn't crash, which is awesome! Do you have any idea if "recommended settings" is just allocating resources across the system profile in a more efficient way or if it is reducing the way it processes the image?

I've not had that problem with my iMac... How much memory do you have in the MacBook Pro?
16gig... It just started happening. But Bob's suggestion seems to have fixed it... Also, its not like a system crash or where the OS stops functioning like when you are out of system resources. Gigapixel would just shut down automatically leaving the rest of the system working just fine.

I can tell you from personal experience, 16GB just doesn't cut the grade. My main PC (32GB) motherboard was recently fried and put me back to using an old 16GB job. Now considering juggling my budget to increase to 128GB on the new board as all this new technology (Ai) gets more and more demanding. As for my poor old MacBook Pro, these days it is being relegated to being nothing more than a portable storage depot whilst travelling.:cry: Does anybody know next weeks winning lotto numbers?

@Chad Huff. I probably should have mentioned (did in another thread but can't remember which one), but there are 4 things you need to consider as they all play a part and if you or anybody else is intending to upgrade, get the best that your budget can afford.
  1. CPU - the microchip that runs everything
  2. GPU - the graphics card - for photography, I would always recommend a dedicated card rather than using the built in onboard GPU.
  3. RAM Memory - what the computer uses for processing
  4. Storage Memory (hard drive) - never fill your drive to capacity. Drives need free space to work with and I always recommend having a minimum of 2 drives. One with nothing but the operating system and any others for storage.
Remember that with today's photography, cameras go hand in hand with computers. We spend big $$$$ on our cameras but in a lot of cases, we try and process those images on computers that are more like a point and click camera. That is to say, we can get good images from the point and click but if you want something better, you better upgrade.

Your Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM will still work cause I use the same (2.7GHz i7 with 16GB DDR3 RAM). Just remember that whenever you are post processing your images just make sure all the other background applications are completely shut. Try it out...it should work.

Hi Chad,

As far as I understand, by selecting "recommended settings" Gigapixel looks at your system HW and based on what you have it allocates resources. The default on install doesn't use the GPU. When looking at a video by Anthony Morganti, it looks like Mac's can utilize the Intel OpenVino code.

Glad it helped!!

Thanks again, Bob... Im sure I could use a new computer but thats not in the cards right now... It really didn't seem like the systeresources were being drained before when it would crash. I spend activity monitor and I could see how much memory etc was being consumed by Gigapixel and it was high, but it wasn't that bad. Your suggestion fixed it though and it runs much faster, so thanks!
