Hey everyone,
I know there are several people on here that have received their 800mm lenses, but just wanted to see if anyone has received one recently? I ordered mine from my local dealer (Mikes Camera in Denver) back when they were available to order, but its been radio silence since. They can just tell me I'm high on the list, but they just aren't getting any in.
I normally dont mind the waiting, but I leave for Africa in 6 days, so I'm pretty bummed that I won't have it to take with me as this trip was a big reason I decided to purchase it

I am #1 on the waiting list at my local shop. No word yet, but was really expecting late summer anyway. Would like it for fall birds. We shall see.

Got on Mike’s Camera California list the day development was announced. I was number 1 on the list but got bumped (I think) by an NPS order with the first copy they got. Finally received their second copy 2 weeks ago.

I certainly understand your frustration. The complete radio silence, until you receive notification that one with your name on it is in, makes it impossible to plan/count on these various hot Nikon items for upcoming trips.

I know this doesn’t help, in fact no doubt makes it worse, but it is well worth waiting for……..

Thanks everyone, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t the only one!

I guess the 100-400 is going to get a workout and my backpack choice just got a lot easier 😂

Word is not a single 800 has been delivered in Canada, according to my camera shop (which has stores across the country). Assuming too you've heard Nikon has stopped taking orders for the lens?

I ordered it on the announcement day. I'm waiting for mine too. I'm not NPS so I'm a low man on the totem pole. I only have a Z6 so I'm either going to get a Z9 or another camera body that can do birding well.

I ordered on June 10th. No word from the retailer since then. They said, there was one lens shipped to Australia in April. Has anyone from Australia got their lens?

1 lens for an entire country. Amazing. And if the situation around Taiwan worsens (producer of 50% of the world's semiconductors), we will receive the 800mm sometime in the year 4000
Yes, one lens.

Hope the situation in Taiwan will not get worse. We don't need more wars.

I preordered prior to the official announcement. The store I am dealing with (Precision Camera in Austin) says they have received one (1) lens so far. I could get upset about this, but uncharacteristically for me, perhaps, I am looking on the bright side, i.e., the prospect of eventually paying the big bucks for this lens seems to have put a damper on my spending generally. Suddenly I am thrifty, sort of.

I ordered one from Mikes in May (I think). Dropped in a week ago and they said one had come through. Must have been yours.

Must have been. I thought they had gotten one previously but I may well be mistaken. I will say Mike’s has been very good to me—got both the Z9 and Z 100-400mm S on the day of release. And one thing is for sure—the 800mm PF is sell worth the wait!

Just a correction here - NPS orders are a specific additional allocation over and above normal allocations. NPS orders NEVER bump allocations or any priority the store establishes. That does not mean you weren't bumped - just not because of NPS.

And yes - it is worth the wait. I've got a chance to ask the question tonight. The normal response is they don't have information about the production and release of the lens, but I'll see if there is anything that can be shared.

Thanks for the clarification. Regardless it is all out of my control so I don’t worry about it. I just put a deposit down on any piece I want as soon as possible, and then just (try to) wait patiently until I get a call.

I wonder if Mike's got one for the whole chain or just the California division? The small local store I order from (which is much smaller the Mike's chain) said I was number one but still don't have mine. So either they gave it to someone else or they never got any (not counting NPS ones). They also were late in getting me the 100-400mm and 400mm f/4.5 (both I got from B&H before them, even though they claimed I was first on their list). Looks like I should switch stores!

I pre-ordered the 100-400 from Mikes and got it on day one. The Z9 took a little longer, but it wasn't bad. I have had good luck with getting things from Mikes, but I'm in Denver so if you are in CA it could be a different story

At one point Nikon had tiers of dealers for gear allocations. The dealers had to sell a certain level of upper level gear each year to maintain their status and level. One dealer I was working with had their dealer priority pulled for not selling enough pro level gear in a year Nikon did not release a hot enthusiast or pro camera. I'm not sure how much Nikon pro level gear your local store sells, but it may give you an idea of where they stand.

Thanks Eric! Unfortunately my local dealership gives me zero information. I don't know the owner/head people, the sales people are pretty bad. When I went to place my last order (the 400mm f/4.5), the sales person gave me totally incorrect info. I called back the next day and got a different person who gave me the correct info. Our prior local store (which was much better known) eventually folded since B&H was always better than them. So my current local store is very happy to collect the deposit ($1,000 in the case of the 800mm f/6.3) but after that, zero info or update (when I picked up my Z9 from them, they wouldn't even tell me how many they got in that delivery). I would assume (this is Silicon Valley) that they sell a fair amount but have no clue, they are still listed as a Nikon dealer.

I understand what you are saying in that the lens he did finally get to buy (the 2nd lens the store every received) was likely the same allocation to the store for their first copy of the lens. The NPS order was a special allocation.

However, Nikon is only producing a finite number of these lenses and therefore every time Nikon allocates a lens off the production line to an NPS order (many of which are placed long after other non-NPS orders) that has a direct effect on how soon a non-NPS lens will get allocated to the stores.

So the NPS order at that store may or may not have delayed the first non-NPS allocation to that particular store. No way to ever know. But in general the more NPS orders that get placed, the slower it is to fulfill non-NPS orders.
