Z Roadmap 20Sept 2022, Nikon brochures

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Very cool. And I see Nikon is calling it the Z 600 f/4 and not the Z 600 f/4 TC. Yet people still insist it will have an internal TC even though the only evidence for that ever being the case was Thom Hogan in a blog post about five months ago saying how Nikon was surprised at the interest in the 400 f/2.8 TC and was wondering if they should alter the Z 600 f/4 design to make it with an internal TC as well. If the lens is in use now and Nikon is calling it the Z 600 f/4, I highly doubt it has an internal TC.

Dear DRM - we need to spike this crud rumour. The patent for the Z600mm f/4.0 with TC has been posted and analysed.
Nikon changed their original social media post when their error was spotted to remove all references/#tags to a Z 600mm anre replace them with the AF-S 600/4.0E-FL that Matt used.

The "photographer" who took the shot of Rory at The Open was Matthew Harris (@matthewharrisphotographer). Matt is an awesome pro golf shooter who travels with the tour and attends the majors. There is no evidence that he was using the Z600/4.0TC - what is more likely is he was using the F-600/4.0E. This was confirmed on the Nikon Pro group on facebook. [#600mmf4] "Nikon is delighted to have extended its partnership with @The-Open-Championship, and what better time to celebrate than during the 150th year of this spectacular tournament. Photographer Matthew Harris (@matthewharrisphotographer) captured these action-packed shots using his #Nikon #Z9 camera and (AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR), showcasing both the speed of the swings and the stunning landscape of St. Andrews. Matthew described how the “high speed of the #Z9 camera certainly comes into its own for golf”, which is clearly shown in the flawless quality of these images. " Paul Ellis and a vast number of other Pro Nikon shooters were out at St Andrews of course they were.

At least 3 recent posts are click bait and NR refuses to remove them when they are proven FALSE. (end of DSLRs, Not taking orders AND this one).

Could you post a link to the patent (or article about the patent) for a Z600/4 with TC. I seemed to have missed that information. Thanks.

I don't believe they included TC in the 400mm f/2.8 road map until it was released.

Another thing to think about is the fact that they can't keep up with demand for other "high demand" lens why would you add to that issue by introducing another camera (mirrorless D500) at the same time that would drive demand up even further. People are already half joking that it will be a year before they get their 200-600 and they haven't even given a release date for it. There are a lot of people currently using 200-500 on Z9 and I haven't heard that many complaints about it (including myself in this group). As mentioned there seems to be a lot of people that are either jumping ship or considering a jump to Sony for that 200-600 so I agree the quality needs to be at least on par with that. I wonder if that was part the cause for the delay? I believe it's the only lens on the original road map that has not been released yet. There is no doubt that it will be heavily compared to the Sony version and if its not as good as it then that would be really bad. Sony 200-600 is a G vs a GM. Honestly not familiar with their lenses line up so not sure of difference is but obviously the GM is the higher level. The appeal of the 200-500 was the range, quality and cost together made it a great seller. Hopefully history repeats itself with 200-600.
I will squeak in here my thoughts on the 600mm and if it may or may not have a TC. It appears that Nikon is taking the approach of releasing higher end lens that no one else offers either in function or price in an effort to not only drive media into talking about them but I'm sure boosting up sales of flagship. 400mm with TC and 800mm are perfect examples of that. Honestly that is why I think they might offer the 600mm with a TC. When that rumor was announced there was a huge buzz about it and almost no one was talking cost at that point they were just saying take my money. We all know Nikon was late to the mirrorless game and probably lost a lot of shooters to Sony. What better way to win them back than to offer a 400mm with TC, 800mm at only 6300 and flagship camera at a grand less than Sony. I'm sure we all watched the video Steve made for 800 and how excited he was for that. This is all pure speculation on my part obviously but it makes sense, at least in my head. I think the problem is that the idea worked too well and now they can't keep up with demand for any of those items. Who knows how many people they are ticking off because of it. Based on this forum it seems to be a lot. Then again complainers are usually louder than those that aren't. Nikon is not know for their great marketing (were you crazy like me and stayed up to watch Z release..OMG that was bad) so who the heck knows. I just hope they continue to produce great products because I really enjoy shooting with them.

Don’t confuse demand from a pure numbers standpoint with the “unexpected” demand for the more expensive 400 TC and 800 PF. Nikon has been able to make and sell a lot more 100-400 S lenses than the 400 TC and 800 PF lenses combined. I was able to buy my 100-400 S 2-3 months after release without placing a preorder, and it routinely becomes immediately available for shipping now at various places. I think Nikon’s ability to manufacture and deliver the 200-600 would be much more in line with the 100-400 S than with the 400 TC and 800 PF and thus Nikon’s performance much more acceptable to the consumer.

I totally agree with that statement. Depending on price I think the demand for 200-600 will be a lot greater than the 100-400 was though. I 100% agree that their capacity to build them will be much higher than the exotics though. I wonder if they planned to release the 200-600 and 600 at same time and back up of 400 + 800 delayed the 600 and thus the 2-6. Either way hopefully we get them both this fall so we can stop talking about them and start shooting with them. LOL

Before we have a lot of back and forth on this. The original Nikon press release called the lens a 600mm f/4 Z lens. They have since changed it (which you have quoted above). None of us know if the new Z mount 600mm will have a TC or not. We are all guessing (some hoping). No reason to get into argument about lens that isn't released and can't be proven either way right now. Unless you have some insider knowledge? ;-)

Frankly I don’t know what drives you to make such statements to call others as liars

Thank you for demystifying this matter! It’s a tempest in a teapot in my opinion.

I suspect the issue was really just a mistake in the hashtag by the social media team. Social media is only relevant for events like that when it is very current. There is little time to validate or proof posts the way there would be with a published article. It's a simple mistake that got blown up because it's social media - and because it was so close to an upcoming expected announcement. I'm amazed we don't see more social media mistakes.

i'm down for the 35 and 85 (likely) 1.2 and really happy to see the 135 (likely) 1.8.

i'm sad nothing in the 300 2.8 range

look like another tamron rebadge in the 70-180

Definitely FX and as it’s totally unexpected, probably Tamron. The fact that it’s got a control ring, a z lens thing, is probably what justifies the price! I read that somewhere…

I would prefer that Tamron just started cranking out their own Z lenses, but the 70-180 looks nice. Compact and light, and good closeup performance. Nikon needs some cheaper options, and this looks like a good one.

The Nikon USA website shows 4 lens as future lenses. Previously they listed 85mm S, 200-600mm (non-S) and 600 S (presumably with a built in TC). Now they have added the 70-180 (not listed as an S lens).

Lenses on the future lens list are not necessarily the next to appear. Could be listed to keep us wishing and loyal to Nikon

Nikon has a habit of changing links across those of its websites servers that host brochures and technical data. Brochures etc have a tendency to vanish. This is besides the new releases / revised editions

[ Update - new Z Roadmap 20Sept into 2023 added pg 3]
