DO NOT DO THIS!!!

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

If you were able to copy the data to a new drive then obviously no harm was done to your data.

I had to download the data from Back Blaze in many small chunks and then upload it to my new disk. My old disk is completely useless and I am unable to get data from it.

Edited to add; I just read the article you posted and the last sentences probably describes what happened. "It completely ignores the question of whether a strong magnet can DAMAGE a hard drive. These strong magnets certainly can damage a hard drive if brought close enough. Keep neodymium magnets away from good hard drives!" My external hard drive was making a clicking noise that got louder and louder. The data might still be there, but it is not retrievable by me.

I took a small screwdriver and popped the magnet off the back of my ProGrade reader - added benefit it is lighter now too! The magnet is under the center back portion with the description of the reader, model and serial number. The rubber portion that surrounds the center can be left alone. Better safe than sorry.

I have the Prograde PG04 CF Express B/XQD reader. Rather than buy a new reader, I have removed the magnet as follows:- Remove the metallic sticker. Under that is magnet that is held in a recess by a plastic clip that is easy to spring out. I left both the magnet and clip out and replaced the sticker in the recess. Try to avoid bending the sticker. A touch of superglue will solve any lifting of corners etc.
@Wink Jones I just used my Outdoor Idaho small simple leatherman pocket tool to remove the magnet. After removing the sticker my version had a single small screw holding the magnet in place. Magnet powerful enough that it had magnetized the screw ... both are now in my plastic trash can. I will have to give the ProGrad reader another try but it always ran much hotter than the Delkin using Delkin or ProGrade cards. Would have tossed it except I wanted it as a back up and for the SD slot.

I downloaded about 2,000 full size raw images on my Delkin Black card last night in the reader. It took over almost 3 minutes (much longer than normal) and I got distracted and forgot to eject the card and it sat in the reader longer than normal and it was warm but by no means hot no warmer than when I took it out of the Z9 after using the camera in 90+ temps yesterday :)

Well, I officially retract my offer of 60% off. I took off the magnet and the metal sticker was still sticky so I put it on the back and now have a spare if anything goes wrong, or if I actually fill my card and overflow into the SD card. It could happen...
I have never had overflow yet to my SD card on my Z6II ... let alone my Z9 cfexpress cards ... but ya never know

I also removed the ProGrade card reader magnet. Also had the screw version holding down the magnet. Magnet was additionally very securely glued to the back of the reader. I wondered about this secure fixing, whether it possibly indicated that the magnet, and the suggestion that the reader be attached to something (metallic) via the magnet, was/is not part of a larger heat sink design. Maybe, maybe not, but I have too many spinning drives to risk strong magnets around them. Hence the magnet removal and I will monitor the card temperatures.

If part of heat sink design it does not work very well .... my prograde and delkin cards got much warmer in it than the Delkin ... I have not tried it yet without the magnet.

Has anyone tried removing the magnet from the ProGrade CFexpress card reader. I've taken the sticker off the back but there are NO screws...no visible access.

Here's what it looks like:

Thanks, Nick. Justin read this thread a told me there were NO references to the CFexpress reader..........hmmmmm....

@Hawkeshead - did you use a flat head screw driver and just pry the magnet up? Thanks for posting!

Glued down…I slipped a jeweler screwdriver to pick up the edge so that I could get a bigger one in to overcome the glue. Apparently there are multiple mounting methods depending on which vendor made the one you got.

I’m not a lover of prograde as I’ve said elsewhere rather a lot! Their support was abysmal when a CFExpress card I’d bought with the reader was just amazingly slow. I tested in camera and loading to a Mac vs XQD. They weren’t interested, apart from confirming it was their latest card. They received it, with the reader, by return.

The DEED is DONE! I haven't tried the ProGrade CFe reader yet, but I never liked that magnetic anyway! As a card reader it has worked well for me. Thanks, all!
Since removing the magnet, it seems the card reader/CFe card gets MUCH hotter, even when the reader is idle. Anyone else notice this? Perhaps the magnet was also acting as a heat sink?
