This is a recent photo of a Bull Elk taken at Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Very nice - and great eye contact.

This looks like the Oconoluftee area. I heard last week the rangers were starting to haze the elk in that area because they were too close to people (and it would be bad form to haze the people). Nevertheless, it's tougher on photographers now.

Thank you! It is Oconaluftee. There is no doubt that the people and the Elk were too close together particularly in the wooded area. I was actually surprised how close without incident and yet there were no Rangers in the woods that I saw the entire five days I was shooting. I was there two weeks ago or so when this photo and a multitude of others were taken. I'll post more later next week when I return from NY. What a great place though to photograph Elk.

Excellent image! I'm truly surprised you got one without a collar! Well done! We are about 1.5 hr from there......but seldom make the trip.

Thank you. I may be wrong, and will check the photos when I’m back in WV, but I remember thinking while almost all the cows had collars the bulls didn’t. It was quite crowded, but it was a great opportunity to photograph elk and the countryside is so beautiful.

I saw that same bull and he did not have a collar. A couple of the younger/smaller ones did. In Chatalooce (spelling?) a couple of the big ones had collars and/or ear tags. It was much less a circus over there. I think the 4 or 5 miles of gravel mountain road kept some of the crowds down. People in that area were much better behaved than what I saw over at the visitor center. I was a little surprised at the number of people who just didn’t understand an 800+ pound testosterone crazed bull elk is just not a creature to be trifled with.
