Canon RF 200-500F4 with 1.4TC built in coming 2023

A 200-500 f4 is likely to be physically large - as 500mm divided by f4 requires a minimum front element size of 125mm.

As far as I know so far nobody has made a 500mm f2.8 - though optical engineering is constantly advancing.

Sigma made a 200-500 f/2.8....it was one of those compact walk around type lenses ideal for travel 😁

My typical rig is a RF100-500 and RF600/f4 on my canon gear. I rarely am at the 100 length on the zoom (yes I also own and EF 100-400). I could definitely see an advantage in situations I'm not hauling the big glass to be able to quickly switch in a 1.4 TD at the 500 range and not miss the shot. I'd buy it for sure. I just wish the Canon crazy peeps would have put the 1.4tc into my expensive RF600/F4 like Nikon did !

If the Canon 200-500 f4 actually comes true, but doesn't have the built-in TC, do you still think it's an awesome lens for wildlife? Or would you just opt for the 600 f4 at that point? I'm just curious if people would value the versatility of the zoom over the extra focal length at the top end.

I’d 100% go with versatility over extra focal length. I’ve often asked myself if I’d be able to deal with a fixed focal length and I don’t think I would be able to. If/when this lens appears is another question entirely, there was a recent YouTube video again with a rumour of it but who knows.

I guess I was thinking more hypothetically, if the price wasn’t a factor, how many would choose a versatile 200-500 f4 vs a longer 600 f4.

The 200-800 is well within the messy middle, with some compromises but only $1900. And the 100-500 around $2500 one of the best bargains around, or the 100-400 at $600 or the 800 at $1000 or the 600 at $800.
