500PF Arrived - 1st shots

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Initial thoughts:
  1. Small --about the size of my Sigma 180mm macro but lighter in weight?
  2. Fast focus
  3. SHARP - so much so I had to dial down my typical LR sharpening settings.
  4. Bokeh is great
  5. Light weight
  6. VR appears to work well
  7. No MA needed that I can tell, right out of the box sharp and hits. I'll do a proper test with Lens Align tomorrow, I've only had it 2 hours LOL
  8. Did I mention it's small and light? lol
I foresee this lens getting a lot of use... i am very impressed so far. I do need to figure out the working distances...the two birds were at about 90 ft, I should have shot it around F/8.0 to get them both in focus.

It was very windy out and not a lot of animals around the house. I was able to capture a few bird shots.

I'm going to go attempt to find some burrowing owls tomorrow and if that doesn't work... zoo or duck pond trip. :)

I use the same combo and it’s changed the way I shoot. I don’t think light and small does it full justice, it also balances perfectly and makes a very active shooting style possible. I have yet to attach it to a tripod! Enjoy (looks like you are up to a great start).

Thanks all. :) I'm still a little shocked when it comes to the size and weight of this lens...pretty amazing. @Bardot this will make a for a great travel lens, it's about the size of a 70-200.

Thanks again all.

Excellent shots Hatch…I likewise got mine last week and after a couple of backyard pond shots we headed up last week to the Venice Rookery and got some…I'll post them in the other 500PF thread so as not to hijack yours. Everything you say is right on though…I think it will remain married (mostly) to my D7500 for now and I'll carry along my wife's old D7100 with my 18-300 zoom rather than keep switching lenses. the 500PF and body hangs much better on my dual Black Rapid strap than the Tamron G2 ever did. The only problem with keeping the 500 on the 7500 is that the slower frame rate and not as good AF system on the 7100 will push me to the Z7II more quickly…although I personally would rather have a higher end crop sensor model for my needs and output usage to save weight.

Hi Hatch.

Remarkable lens put to good use. Fine photos.

JIM

1. Yes... my patio door is filthy and needs to be cleaned.
2. My cat would love to be outside eating the quail I'm photographing.
3. Shooting at 1/100th a second hand-held at 500mm is pretty cool. The VR appears to be working well. All four I shot of her are sharp.

Just a snapshot... but... I'm impressed with the lens... to say the least.

I ordered 1 on Friday because I only had a 70-200 when I went to photograph Eagles in Port Tobacco Maryland Seeing your photos lets me know I made the right choice
With my crop sensor camera it makes it a no-brainer for the Eagles We are going back as soon as it arrives

@woodym1 Many thanks and a big congrats on the lens, I hope you get a ton of use out of it. It's been glued to my camera!

Mine was front focusing by 2, made the adjustment and it's been great. Also, set the VR to Sport... the AF point doesn't move in this mode. Have fun and post some shots of the eagles. :) Hatch

200mm just was not enough Cropped very heavy They were ok to post on Facebook to friends and family but not here Adorama said 1-3 days shipping Thanks for the tip on front focus I will check mine before I take it out

Great Shots !!! I love the kitty looking through the glass on the door. I got my 500pf in June of last year picked it up about noon in West Yellowstone and started shooting in the park at 5PM by 9PM it had been broken in on Harlequin Ducks in Flight, Wolves and Elk in velvet the three things I wanted to find ... so also brought good luck. I had never used it on anything but the D850 until I got the D6. I just put it on my D500 (gripped) to check that out. And trying the Tamron 150-600 G2 on the D6 ... curious to see what it does on a body that it was not tuned by Tamron for which is my gripped D500.
