800mm Z lens orders

Ordered 4/6 from B&H. FedEx delivery tomorrow 9/1. Thank you Nikon and thank you B&H.

I see from another thread that you ordered it about 5 hours after pre-orders opened. I’m still waiting, but ordered from B&H at 9:06 PST April 5 ( I got the email from B&H that pre-orders were open 2 minutes after I received the order confirmation!). When I talked to customer service a month ago, I was told that I would get one when they got a shipment. He went so far as to say it didn’t matter that I wasn’t NPS. It would seem that wasn’t the case.

Anyway, hope you’re enjoying using it. I’ll continue to wait patiently for mine.

Got here today (ordered 4/5 from Nikon USA). The build of this thing really makes me question spending 7000 USD. My 600 f/4 feels like an expensive lens. This 800PF... not so much. Oh well, I don't give a **** provided it performs as well everyone says it does.

I received a message from Nikon today, stating they were preparing to ship mine, and needed me to respond by Monday as to whether my invoice/order was still valid with my camera store.

Of course I verified the invoice and replied to Nikon today.

It's been over five months since I preordered the 800mm PF lens, so out of (morbid?) curiosity I contacted the person at Precision Camera in Austin who handles their online orders. As of late April they had received ONE lens, and I was fourth in line for future shipments. Well, here it is five months later and she informed they have received ZERO lenses since then. Whoa.

I confess that my emotions in response to this factoid were mixed. On the one hand, I am reconciled to the reality that I do not need this lens. I own plenty of great gear to take bird photos without it, and if I never receive the lens the overall quality of my life will be unaffected, really. And my bank account will be less depleted. On the other hand, I also feel a mild kind of anger/disgust with Nikon for its apparent inability to get this job done. It's similar to the emotion I experience when my favorite football team has a bad game (which happened last Sunday). There is a certain perverse pleasure in feeling scornful and critical towards "my" team or camera company when they screw up, but beneath that I am still loyal and hopeful.

Does it have a plastic feel to it? Not nearly as heavy as you expect given the size?

The 400 f/4.5 feels like that to me. But I have to believe Nikon did extensive testing of the materials and that’s likely what the future holds. And based on my use of the 400 f/4.5, I bet in time I start associating that feel with modern day performance.

I an promise you that the lens is sharp and functions well. It does not need to be heavy to be an excellent lens. I have not used my 600 f/4 since getting the 800mm PF in May. My experience is I take the 800mm with me even if I "might" use it - such as a casual bird walk 800 miles from home. The 600 f/4 only went if I had plans to use it seriously.

Nikon stopped taking orders from their U.S. dealers for the 800mm and the 400mm lenses. That would indicate that current orders are 100% of what they can produce in the remainder of 2022. I received my 800mm in June through the NPS priority program and placed my order with Brad at Berger Bros. the day I received the notification from NPS. My priority 100-400mm lens with B&H was received and then sold to another customer so now all my orders are with Berger Bros or Samy's.
