In the spring, male Yellow-headed Blackbirds try to attract mates by singing their song from an exposed perch in the reeds in a wetland. Males defend a small territory and may attract up to 8 mates. After mating, the cryptically colored female builds her nest in the reeds over water. The male often helps feed the nestlings, but only in the nest of the first female with which he mates. The other females are left to raise their nestlings on their own.
