A1 or Z9

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

The Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 and current Canon's are out of date already..........by comparison to whats coming soon and into the future.

Sports action cameras are at 45 to 50mp, with high iso and 3 D tracking, the landscape portraiture models will be out in the 85, 90 100 mp very soon ?

The Canon R1 is coming so the industry leap frogging is active again, the R1 will make the Z9 feel like its stuck in 3rd place....... the industry is trying to generate a recovery and new growth using new features and more frequent refresh models like the smart phone industry.

Taking stills from video sadly is the future for mainstream photography......hence the hybrid cameras are advancing in the video area more than stills area.

Nikon's new Eco head office is a mega investment........share holders have been optimistic i guess...........claimed 400,000 Z9 orders ????? if its true its worth approximately around $2.25 Billion Retail excluding on sales of lenses etc, is this hype to please the shareholder......or are the numbers real.......

Happy days..............

If its true 400,000 units on a 365 day basis is 1095 units a day to be produced on a single 12 hour shift......or 91 units an hour.........who knows how many shifts their are ?

Single digit pro cameras are usually made in Japan to a very high QC standard.............watch this space.......

Many people have enjoyed the A1 for some time while others have laid wounded with obsolete gear and indecision, the A1 owners bravo, you haven't wasted time...

The greatest currency in the world is not the US $ its TIME, why Time, we spend it every second every day, spend it wisely............

One of the biggest enemy's in life is indecision, to brake that we need to make the decision to make the decision...........

I have ordered a Z9 because if it can do 20fps raw at 45 mp, has a tilt screen, and has with IBIS, hey its a good step forward..........will the drill down model be more suitable and lighter yes possibly but not at the cost of time and rising inflation....................120fps is something of no value to me.

Inflation and currency will be a curse going forward, don't waste time............get what ever you can afford or use what you have and just enjoy photography..........while skill sets still are relevant for a little while longer..

Interesting take in the link below !!!!!

Only an opinion as always

I will be shooting stills until I die and then they can toss my hard drives in the trash. Just a hobby for me and I am happy with the new technology but no interest in video.

I have no interest in Video either.........and yes i like the new technology.........like IBIS tilt screen 45mb 20 fps, but it seems that the cameras are fighting and pouring more effort into Video both in cameras a lenses.............

Does anyone know the difference between the Z9 Adapter 9 (FTZ II ) vs the Z6 adapter ( FTZ )? Will the Z6 adapter ( FTZ ) work on the Z9 or do we now need multiple adapters?

the internals are supposed to be the same, but they removed the hump with the tripod mount so you have room for your fingers when using the vertical grip. The original FTZ will work, but makes holding the camera vertical awkward.

Some questions

If Thom Hogan said that he uses the D6 rather than his A1 for Sports Action, because the D6 just locks on and sticks better, what dose that say for the Z9 that is not as good in the focus tracking compared to the A1 and R3 according to Jarred Polen real hands on shoot. Jarrod's hands on shoot wont be any different to what we would do.

DP reviews hand on test says the Z9 is excellent and is on the heels of the A1 R3 in focusing, but ahead in Video. Unless i miss understood.

The 120 FPS is a cool feature, but............what do you do with it if teh files a Jpeg Normal and 11 mb.......where is the dynamic range, iso, or crop ability in the slightest way.

Another question is when doing 120 fps dose the Z9 re-focus on every frame............that takes horsepower ???? if not its a marketing tool like 3,000,000 iso on the D5

The Z9 is slower by 50% in raw than the A1 R3.......

The question needing an answer is............

Is the Z9 at least as good in colour detail dynamic range compared to the D850 Z7II...........

Will the MC 30 remote cable work on the Z9
Will the 18 A battery work on the Z9
Will the MH 26 A charger work on the Z9 D battery...........

I'm happy with my D500/500PF combo at this point in time. However, I know that I'm going to go mirrorless at some point, as bird AF and WYSIWYG in the viewfinder is a major improvement over the D500 combo. So, for me my options right now are the Sony A1/200-600 or keep the 500PF and add the Z9 with adapter. Megapixels are similar, so that's not a concern. As for cost here in Australia the Z9 is showing at around $8900 and the adapter FTZii around $400. The Sony A1 is $8999 and the 200-600 $2500. So, $9400 for Nikon vs $11,500 for Sony. Selling my Nikon (not sure what it's worth now...just over a year old) would reduce the cost of the Sony combo.
So...if my main concern is bird eye AF, which is the best combo? (especially for BIF) Renting either combo is not feasible or even an option here in Brisbane. I know there needs to be more reviews of the Z9's eye AF, but I'm just interested in other views here. Cheers.
I've been considering a jump to Sony again with the new A1. Tried one for 2 days.
Although higher resolution I found the less usable than a Z7 (it drops resolution at certain uses)
The 400 flash sync would be nice.
Low light and colour was better than a Z7 but not as good as my D6.
Both cameras seem to have a fantastic sensor.
I was concerned about the Z9 not having a mech shutter. But both Nikon and Sony seem to have conquered rolling and banding.
I've ordered a Z9 because it is probably the better camera for me and Nikon a has good repair service.
I hope this helps.

Will the MH 26 A charger work on the Z9 D battery...........

they said the focus refocuses for each shot in the 120fps and one video I saw mentioned the new charger is only compatible with the new batteries and I think they mentioned the old charger won’t charge the new batteries. The battery charger compatibility seems a little confusing.

Do the older batteries work on the Z9 i thought they did......so that means one needs 2 different charges

The old batteries are supposed to work, but it sounded like the chargers weren’t compatible. I haven’t looked more into it since I dont have any old batteries but they are cheaper to buy than the new ones. I figured I’d end up just buying one of the new ones for a spare once I get the camera.

To me, the A1 and Z9 are very close in capability. I already own Nikon lenses, batteries, etc. So, for me it is the Z9. Now, if Nikon will take my money and ship - I’ll be all set. :)

Unless I misunderstood, Steve Perry came to much different conclusions regarding the AF comparison between D6 and A1.
Granted he is shooting wildlife but had over 60,000 frames when he recorded his A1 review
I expect the Z9 is going to be extremely good just like the A1.
A1 and Zee9 are probably going to be very comparable with subtle differences, mostly for bragging rights on these forums.

Yes i saw that review and I respect Steve and his findings 100%, I guess there has to be a reason why Hogan feels that way for sports action only.

The reviews from the filed show the Z9 a little lagging in focus tracking in sports action.......i found this with Jarrod Polan while a geek his examples where real...
DP review loved the Z9 but as i recall the Z9 is a vast improvement with its AF tracking that will only get better ???? i need to look at it again.........

That said i find serious sports action in challenging light more demanding that wild life shooting..........maybe that's what Hogan is eluding to........?? interesting, i mean Hogan is to be respected 100%, his daily kit is the Z6II Z7II and the Z50 walk around hack ............he has the A1 and D6 as well.

What I have seen is that all EN-EL18 batteries work in the z9 BUT
only the types b and c can be charged in camera and in the new charger. Types a only charge in the old charger.
I looked into it on Nikon’s website and it looks like FB101 is accurate. I’m glad to see the charger is compatible with more of the batteries than I thought.

From the battery charger page
The MH-33 battery charger cannot be used to charge EN-EL18 or EN-EL18a batteries.

From Z9 tech specs page
EN-EL18d rechargeable Li-ion battery
EN-EL18c, EN-EL18b, EN-EL18a,and EN-EL18 batteries can also be used. Note, however, that fewer pictures can be taken on a single charge than with the EN-EL18d.

Ken Rockwell has a pretty detailed break down of the specs, answered some questions, informative, i guess most of it came from the Camera manual..........

The question is now traveling to New Zealand for 3 weeks to holiday in a motor home and casually do some nice street, landscape, and travel photography, do you take a Z9 or D850 on a 28-300 LOL ............or just the I phone 13 pro plus.............as you don't want to lug a bag or gear..........
