Anyone with experience 200-500 5.6 + tc1.4 on z bodies?

Hi,
the recent post someone made about the 200-500 lens got me thinking about using it in tandem with a tc1.4. on a Z body. Let me just get this out off the way, I use the Nikon Z6II with the ftzii and nikon 200-500 and absolutely love this combination. It serves my needs well, and for me the IQ is brilliant out of the lens. The thought of using the tc1.4 together with the 200-500 never crossed my mind until I read the aforementioned post and someone mentioned this setup there. Anyone here have any experience with this setup? a z body, a ftzii, a tc1.4 and 200-500? was the image quality poor? was the autofocus super slow? (keep in mind just as is I find the lens has fast enough autofocus for my needs) what's your take on it? is it worth trying out? anyone have any sample images I might take a gander at? while I wait for 200-600 native z mount, which seems like it will be a while, I would like to try this setup and maybe get that extra reach.

I would appreciate any advice on the setup. incase anyone who is wondering how the 200-500 performs with the z6ii just search me on Vero @saopaulosoul to see images I have taken with it, the pics mention the gear I used.

Thanks.

Hi there, I don't know if you are referring to a comment I made, but I have used the 200-500 with a 1.4 TC attached to the FTZ II and the Z9. I find the auto focus is a bit slower with the 1.4 than without it, and unless the light is really good, focus is not always quite as sharp. No statistics, just a gut feel. You asked for some pictures to take a look at. I selected two that have not been edited in any way, to rule out any post processing influences. I have done no testing, but I think I'd get as good or better results by using DX mode. Has anyone compared this? (1.4TC with 200-500 vs. DX with 200-500)

ah thanks so much, your reply def gives me something to think of. I appreciate the pics, The first one def looks sharp enough, the second one seems to be tad softer, but still acceptable, for me at least. My thinking is if I buy the tc 1.4 I could use it with a 500 pf if I were to buy one in the future.

Then there is the idea that maybe I should just stay put, not spend any money and instead wait for the 200-600 native z mount, and possibly consider a tc 1.4z to pair with it. that's IF the 200-600 would be compatible with a tc.

Again thanks very much, I will ponder a bit longer about this.

I am happily using my Nikon f mount 200-500 lens (with adapter) with my Nikon 1.4 TC on my new Z9. It suits me just fine and, to my eye, I really don't see any degrading in sharpness with or without the TC.
Dave thanks a lot! I appreciate your response, could you post maybe a sample image I might take a look at? or give me your Vero, Insta where I might take a look at some images you have taken with that setup? I am almost ready to bite the bullet and buy the tc 1.4 for F mount, but some images would def help convince me. thanks again!

Here is an image with the 200-500 and 1.4 TC on the Z6. The Z6ii AF is faster than the Z6. I would not count on it for fast moving subjects or birds in flight, but for a static subject it's pretty good. This is uncropped. I did find it a bit soft for deep cropping, but that's to be expected.

This is a combination I would use if I owned it, but I'm not sure I would buy either the lens or TC knowing this was an important use. I'd only use it with excellent light.
