Are you a NANPA Member?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Are or were you ever a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA)? If so, how do or did you like your membership benefits? I've been a member for a number of years but over the past couple of years have found it to be less interesting and useful, especially at $100/year. Granted, part of this is probably due to the pandemic since they haven't be able to sponsor many in-person events, but they also haven't done much to add value during the interim. Quite honestly, I enjoy my $10 subscription to Outdoor Photographer much more.

What do you think?

I've been a NANPA member for a few years. Whenever my membership renewal comes up I often question the value. The sponsored tours can be a real bargain. Beyond that.....

I have thought about joining but I am not leading workshop, I don't need equipment insurance (I have a rider on my home owner insurance), I am not interested in the squabbles about should be allowed or disallowed in nature photography (photography should be fun), so I have not seen a reason to spend $100. Seems high to be when I compare to $30 membership for a camera club. Bottom line I have not joined because no one has articulated a good reason for me to join - WIIFM (What's In It For Me). Lots of reasons why it good for Nanpa if I join ...

I'm a member because I like the idea of an organization that can serve as a collective voice for nature photographers. If I complain, I'm just me. If the issue sparks more through NANPA, it's more likely to be heard.

Have been a member for about ten years. I find it a good source for places to photograph and people to contact. Have used the NANPA equipment insurance for all my camera gear and computers and have found the service invaluable for claims.
I know they are in the process of redoing the website to hopefully make their services more useful and reachable.

I wish NANPA and some other photo organizations would help us deal with the airlines. I would be glad to pay extra for guaranteed carry-on space. As a photographer I need it, as a string player my wife also needs it (viola and violin). My gear could be replaced with money but the trip would be ruined if the camera was destroyed on their way, her instructments are much more individual and it would take her a year or two find a replacement.

But the airlines simply don't care so we always buying expensive tix to get early deps on carry on space.

Have you ever thought of shipping your gear to the destination? Camera gear is ordered and shipped out daily using normal shipping methods.

I’ve been a NANPA member for some time. Agree that an organization that provides a collective voice for nature photographers is a plus. I’ve enjoyed several of the NANPA zoom talks during COVID.

Africa? Don't think so. Even domestically to ship several full sized cameras, 180-400, ... would could cost $$$. Might be cheaper to buy a seat for it on the plane.

It's been a while since I've considered membership. In the past when I looked it was not obvious that it's benefits are worth the price of admission for me. Also some aspects of their nature photo ethics positions I disagreed with.

Has membership cost increased in last few years? $100/yr seems more than what I recall last time I looked.

No where on the NANPA website can I find if NANPA is a 501c tax exempt organization. For their claimed education, conservation. photographer rights, etc. work I would think they would/should? be tax exempt eligible. If not then I consider it a for-profit photographer affinity group.
