I found this Australian Spotted Crake early morning at a local wetland. It briefly spent some time out in the open

Great shot, I wondered if there was a spotted variety when I posted a Spotless Crake from N.Z. 3 or 4 days ago.

Thanks Stumpy - we also have a Spotless Crake that looks to be the same as yours. We had a very wet spring and a cool summer here and there are surprising numbers of Spotless Crakes around at present. In past years it has been unusual to see more that 1 or 2 skulking in the wetlands. I saw 4 this morning and others have reported seeing over 20 in a day. It has been a strange summer here for wetland birds around Melbourne because of the amount of water inland from the floods in spring.
