Brown Watersnakes (Nerodia taxispilota) are non-poisonous fish-eating snakes common in flowing water of rivers, canals, and blackwater cypress creeks in the coastal regions of the Southeastern United States. Came upon this amorous couple on a creek that empties into the mouth of the Scuppernong River in Columbia, NC. Females are much heavier and longer than males; this female was a good 4ft in length; her suitor ~15 inches. Watersnakes engage in courtship rituals and mating on tree limbs or branches. The male snake begins by crawling alongside a female while he rubs his body along hers as he attempts to get their cloacae aligned. Brown watersnakes are ovoviviparous – the female’s eggs incubate inside her body. Her young will be live born long about August.
