Burrowing Owls in the Boca Raton/Fort Lauderdale area.

I did a quick search and yielded Cape Coral area but not the east coast area of Florida was just curious if anyone lived in that are that could direct me in the right area. Driving 3 hours plus from where I'm staying I at least wanted to narrow down my time. Thanks in advance.

Are they all over the park or just in certain areas?
You’ll see the stakes and ropes marking the spots. You can’t miss them. Also look up there are parakeets flying around as well. I visited last year and took this pic. I’ll be in Cape Coral next week and focusing on burrowing owls.

Wonderful capture and thank that will make the 3 hour drive tolerable! I would love to go to Cape Coral as well because it looks awesome as well.

As others mentioned, with marked burrows they’re easy to find in Cape Coral, but if you want some personal, on the ground recommendations, try contacting these folks. They’re typically very helpful. Have fun! https://ccfriendsofwildlife.org/burrowing-owl/

Burrowing Owls may also be found at FAU (Florida Atlantic University) in Boca Raton. They are FAU's mascot and they burrow in open fields on the college campus. The FAU campus was designated a burrowing owl sanctuary in 1971 by the Audubon Society.

I live in Florida and have been to most of the spots mentioned but my favorite is Vista View Park in Pembroke Pines. It is an old abandoned large garbage mound, treed, grassed and converted into a very nice park. Being elevated the Burrowing Owls seem to have flourished. One of the reasons I like it more than the places mentioned it is easier to get pleasing backgrounds for your images. I have not visited FAU, I’ll have to try it.

Thanks for the info I knew Vista View Park was a hotspot for these guys and if I'm traveling 3 hours plus I might as well find a nice place with some pleasing backgrounds and focus on that instead of some of the other places.

+ 1 for Vista View park. It's a lot of fun.

Wonderful images as well. I knew by watching your videos and paying attention to others that being on ground level is a must for these guys to get the very best results. I will be working with a pad and tripod since I will be driving vs. flying. I just hope that once I get down that far and I can't get back up there will be someone around to help me :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: just kidding a little.

If there's nobody there to help you back up, the next best thing is someone else right down there with you to share the experience with you. ;) My suggestion is that if this happens, go back to shooting photos of the owls!

A lot of locals frequent the park for fitness and sporting activities so there are always people around and I’m sure someone would be willing to help out :ROFLMAO:. It also means the owls are fairly used to seeing people. There are also a few spots where you can be level with the owls without laying on the ground. If I remember correctly, those spots are near the RC airplane field. If you’re capable of walking up and down hills easily enough, you can go down the side of the hill near the water and there are some on the hillside so you don’t have to get down as low.

They are surprisingly easy to find - their areas are roped off. It feels a little like cheating.

I'll be down that way for about 5 days in late February and plan on visiting both. I got to Brian Piccolo park last year but missed vista view, was at both the year before. Both are awesome for Burrowing Owls.
