Canon 400mm DO mk2

Hi folks, does anyone have much experience with this lens? I'm running an R7 with the 100-500 lens and am finding the f7.1 a tad limiting. I guess with the RF/EF adaptor the 400mm do would fit onto the R7 but my main query is whether I could put on a TC as well. Basically can you run a non RF TC on a mirrorless body. Any advice gratefully received.

I had the IS DO mk2 for about a year and a half with an R5, and ef 1.4 and 2.0 extenders. It worked fine. Autofocus would probably be a little faster with the 100-500. Switched to Sony because their setup works better for tracking my usual subject matter, so I'm not really sure if it was Canon's tracking software or the use of the older lens and adapter. But I suspect it's the software and not an issue with the lens. I first rented the lens with my first R5 (had a motherboard problem) and then the new R5 and copy of the lens that I purchased and the experience was the same between both pairs.

I had the 400DOII on the 7DII when the Canon EOS-R came out. I tried the 400DOII on the EOS-R, but had issues with jerky behavior in the viewfinder, small random jumps.
It was acknowledged by a few other users, but there was no solution back then, so I eventually switched to the Nikon D500+500PF, and after that to the Sony A1 to do mirrorless right.
The image quality was very good from this lens, but I was always using it with a TC, never bare which would bring out the best, and when subjects were close to the background, the OOF rendering was not very pretty.
Apart from those two issues I liked the lens a lot.

You should probably check whether the viewfinder jumps are fixed with the R5, because it made using the lens awkward.

Yes you can use the EF TCs between the RF adapter and the lens. Basically once the adapter is in place you can treat the lens selection just like anything you could mount to an EF DLSR.

I used the 400DOII on R5 and it worked great. Used both EF MkIII TCs also.

Thank you for that, much appreciated 👍
