Canon RF 200-500F4 with 1.4TC built in coming 2023

That is going to be a sweet lens. Probably $12,000+?

I'll take a 24-70, a 100-300, a 200-500 1.4, a 15-35 2.8, and a 100mm macro, please. Maybe skip the 100-300 since the macro and the 200-500 has it mostly covered.

Makes the camera cost an afterthought.

I agree. I suspect seeing the price of the 100-300 I’d guess closer to $14k however considering what the big primes cost this would be a good deal.

Very interesting! I currently use an adapted EF 100-400mm II and a Sigma 150-600mm C.

Would love a lens like this 200-500 w/1.4 extender or perhaps a 600mm F/4 one day! The integrated 1.4 extender is a great feature.

Also, I’ve considered the Canon RF 100-500 f/4.5-7.1. Seems like an amazing lens from what I’ve heard from others, though I’m unsure if I’d want to spend the money on it or use the money I would have spent to save for a 200-500 w/1.4 ext or 600 f/4.

Wow.. depending on weight and price, this would be a lens that causes me to switch back to Canon. Ideally I'd Nikon to make a 500 f/4 TC, but this zoom lens version is even more compelling due to the greater versatility. Man.. these manufacturers are hitting the right buttons these days (to get people to open their wallets).

700mm f5.6 (500mm + 1.4x) is an odd max focal length. With the Nikon 500PF the draw was its weight-to-focal ratio, but this puppy? Hmmmmm

And the hassle of adding a TC to get to 840mm+ sort of defeats the draw of an integral TC lens.

Seems like most wildlife people want a 600 f4 with an integral TC1.4x for 840mm f5.6. Maybe the market for this lens is outdoor field sports guys or some sort of video application?

It would be very appealing to me, not in any genre other than 'outdoors.'

You could get 3 or 4 100-500 For one 200-500 tc.

Yeah probably $13K to match the 600/4. 500/4 was a few grand cheaper than 600/4 in the DSLR days but if they are making it a zoom and giving it a built-in TC then it will hit top dollar. That 100-300 is a pricy lens compared to the 300/2.8ISII and it doesn't even have the 1.4TC.

I’m not a canon shooter but this is a lens worth being excited for! This could be a great wildlife lens!

This seems to be an upgrade of the f4 EOS Mount 200-400 to which Nikons answer is the 180–400 F mount with built-in TC.

As Nikon already has two primes with a built in TC, I expect they will upgrade their 180–400 within the next couple of years.

Edit - perhaps Nikon and Canon will play"lens leap frog" over the next 3 to 4 years and Sony may also respond to this competition.

Different price points for sure! I can afford the 100-500 f/4.5-7.1 now where the 200-500 f/4 or 600 f/4 would be a longer term option for me.

Just not sure it’s worth it to upgrade from what I currently have. Especially since I have a toddler and infant that keep me busy at home!
And even if you add all those 100-500 lenses together you still can't shoot at f/4
I agree, shooting at f/4 is the reason to own one of the big expensive lenses. I should rent one one of these days!

This lens may or may not be coming. Canon has not made a development announcement or put it on their roadmap; it is still a rumor at this point. I could be wrong, but I believe the source quoted at the top of this thread is an imitation site that steals information from CanonRumors, which said they are getting conflicting information and we should expect an announcement (not necessarily a release) in 2023. Announcement is about an RF replacement for EF 500 f4, which could or could not be this zoom. Here is the CanonRumors article (posted on May 4; the coypcat article quoted above was posted May 9): https://www.canonrumors.com/will-the-ef-500mm-f-4l-is-usm-ii-replacement-for-the-rf-mount-be-a-zoom/

Yes, I am highly skeptical too.
Remember that a RF500mm f4.5DO was supposedly (according to canonrumors) being tested in the field over two years ago, only to never hear from that lens again.
Rumors, rumors....

I have been wondering though what Canon long lens designers are doing these days, if it had not been for the RF100-300 I would have sworn they are fast asleep, dreaming of working at Nikon

They used to design lenses like the 400mm f4DOII

Not all lens design prototypes make it into production - either because of eventual production costs, the estimated likely market demand, or optical quality issues.

A 400 mm f4 requires a minimum front element size of 100mm, a 500 f4.5 111mm and a 500mm f4 125mm.

Whether a DO 500mm f4.5 could have been made for less than the 500 f4 is something Canon are likely to know.
If it would have cost perhaps 33% more than the 500mm f4 to make; I can understand a marketing decision that the lighter weight offset by a higher price for a slower wide open aperture would not sell in sufficient numbers to make a profit.

It is probable a 125mm front element is now possible for a 200-500 f4.
The cost of production with 'high enough" optical quality is probably being considered by Canon - using prototype versions.

They sure have been having a long nap. Someone was awake for the 100-300 but still forgot to drop in the 1.4TC.

They also used to design lenses like the 600 f/4 DO....one can only hope those employees are still with Canon and furiously updating the EF design to an RF design and adding a built in TC.

Once they do, I'll say sayonara to Sony and hello to an R1 with 600/4DOTC 😁

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be a great option, no doubt. And it’s been long rumored. Three years ago when I started researching which of the mirrorless lines to delve into I looked at the lenses each option had or were soon expected to have. I came across rumors of Canon coming out with a 200-500 TC. Here’s a rumor from over two years ago of it.
