Chironomus plumosus

Didn't realize it was a midge until I looked it up. I often use BugGuide.net or post on iNaturalist to get ID's. BugGuide can be the fastest.
I ran the images thru 5-6 places including a bug app called insect Id on my phone and finally narrowed it down. I thought it was holding a feather but that is the male and yes you are correct it is in the midge group/family. It has been a once in a lifetime find.
