I don't remember seeing these Common Redpolls around my feeder in the past. I'm thinking I may have confused them with House Finch if they were here before. Today, though, I managed to ID them correctly. What sets them apart from the House Finch is the red cap on the head. The entire head of the house finch is a reddish pink. The other differences are that these guys are smaller than the house finch and their feathers on the wings and back are more contrasty colored.
These birds migrate south from the far northern parts of Canada in winter down to the south of Ontario and the northern parts of the northern US states from what looks like North Dakota eastwards.
