Crop-more, less or OK as is?

This is an Andean Motmot. The shot was taken with a Canon R5, 100-500 mm @500 mm, f/7.1, ISO 5000, at a distance of about 5 meters. The bird is sitting on a fence post (not very picturesque). Unfortunately his eye was pretty much centered in the frame when I composed the shot. I cropped this shot about to about 2/3 original frame, mainly from the right side keeping a 1:1 ratio. My question is, should I crop more from the top or ?. It would require going to a custom ratio (which I have no problem with as I rarely print). Also a second question, would you remove the dragon fly wing from his beak? I just missed him swallowing the insect.

I might lose a little off the top as there's a lot of empty space up there. Hard to say how other potential crops might look without seeing the original but this is a very nice presentation as is. I personally wouldn't clone out the Dragonfly wing as it adds a touch of interest and isn't really distracting the way something like a smear of suet from a backyard feeder might be.

Really nice image of a beautiful bird!

[edit]looking some more, I'd say a 3:2 aspect ratio crop placing the bird's eye much higher in the frame would likely work well. IOW, you might try a 3:2 or 5:4 crop that pretty much cuts out a bunch of the empty space above the bird.

Like DR said hart to say without seeing the uncropped image. This looks fine to me. I like the insect wing in its mouth. Kind of tells a story. I’m not familiar with this bird. Now I know insects are part of its diet.

It’s a nice image. In your editing program, try taking off the top 1/4th of the frame and check that out. Horizontally it looks OK. Dragonfly wing adds to the image.
