Gorgeous shot! Camped near that peak, with a photographer carting a 4x5, for several days waiting for the cloud to clear in hopes of such a shot. The weather finally broke for a couple of days but Denali made it's own weather and I've never seen the peak with my own eyes.

We stayed at Northface Lodge about 90 miles inside of the park. I have two photos, one with the mountain and a husband and wife looking at it - the wife wanted to get a slightly different foreground into her photograph and she walked about 10 feet to her right - during those few seconds, the mountain disappeared! Posted below.

That story sums up trying to see Denali, perfectly! :)

One interesting fact about Mt. Denali - It's taller than Mt. Everest. Not higher; taller. Height is measured from sea level and the top of Mt. Everest is farther above sea level than Mt. Denali but, Taller is measured from the base to the top and in this measurement, Mt. Denali is greater.

Nicely done Howard! I've been out to Wonder Lake a couple of times and the mountain has been covered in clouds each time even while camping at the lake for a few days.

Here's the kind of Denali scenics I've managed to capture, it's looking down on the 14,000 foot camp(those tents and tracks in the snow in the lower right), the Kahiltna glacier and Mt. Foraker from the 17,000' camp on Denali. Shot with no metering on my old Nikon FE as the meter batteries couldn't handle the cold. Just estimated everything from sunny f/16 for most of the trip :) Shot on Velvia if I recall correctly.

If I remember correctly, Wonder Lake was a bicycle ride from the lodge.

What a magnificent photograph - stunning!

Dave and Howard - these are stunning captures. I love glacier capped mountains. Unfortunately in a few decades (if not years) we may have very few of these gorgeous landscapes left on our planet.

To my eyes having the large shrub in the foreground serves to diminish the size of the mountains in the background. Check out some of Mangelsen's images of Denali to get an idea of how to avoid this.

Not sure which elevation camp this is. Summit flight from Talkeetna. If someone recognizes the camp location I would like to know (ie 3,4 etc)

The summit, three mountaineers descending on trail at 5 o'clock. 7/7/10 at 9:18PM.
D90, 18-105 DX kit lens, through plexiglass canopy, JPG. I was too clueless then to save the RAW files even though I shot BOTH.
