This large family group were coming in from the dusty interior to a nearby waterhole. These pachyderms appear taller, but in fact they are the same height as other elephants, it is just their poorer desert diet that makes them "leaner". They do, however, have bigger foot pads, an adaptation to the sandier terrain they have to negotiate. Additionally , they can go for long periods without water (females and infants 3 days--males up to 5 days ). This shot was taken shortly after dawn with D60 and Tamron 70-300mm @ 125mm. f6.3, ISO 100, 1/640 sec., handheld.

Fantastic Shot, what is in the BG on the right? looks like Animal Fight club... LOL.
Thanks Gordon --- I've inspected a couple of other pics I had of this group, and it looks as if the "compost heap" on the right is a pile of dead shrubs which have clumped together, either by wind action or humans ! Funny I never really noticed it before.
