Hi y'all, I am under the impression most hawks have one meal a day only, yet today I caught this Red Tail Hawk having dinner.

Neither; it's having its breakfast! ;)

If this is the first meal of the day, the hawk must be 'breaking its fast'.

What wonderful things we discover from the stories photographers tell!

as all James Bond (aka Sean Connery) know, its not one word, breakfast as we English say it, but two words, distinctly separate, Break Fast. spoken with a Scottish accent.
Unfortunately one cannot photograph speach unless you're using some kind of oscilloscope 🤔

They eat all they can catch. The Craighead brothers (famous grizzly researchers at Yellowstone), as graduate students did a lot of research on raptors in winter, if I remember correctly they concluded that red-tailed hawks in Michigan have to eat an average of two and a half meadow voles a day to maintain their body weight.

Thank you Woody. The Red Tail Hawk is the most popular urban hawk, this particular one seems the resident in our local park, though without banding, I can not be certain, I have witness the killing of Amrican Coot twice.

It's a bit difficult to get a clear shot with all the pine branches around, I took quite a few shots to find the raised talon, to me this is the better moment without being too gory.

Enjoy.
