Does the Z9 still have AF issues after firmware 3.01?

Yes. The last post I read said that NPS has acknowledged it. So maybe its a combination of settings.
Curious if you read that Nikon confirmed or actually saw their notice. Anyway, this is one of several that required tracking, a photo I made last Friday, tracking looks great in all of them.

and not to go too far down the rabbit hole on this one, but i interpret that as:

if you are in 3d tracking, the camera will always use a value of 3 for blocked shot regardless of what you set here.

if you are using auto-area, blocked shot is really only 3-5 (a value of 3 will be used if you set it to 1 or 2)

so what was the behavior you observed that isn't working correctly @BarkingBeansCoffee ?

John I just mentioned in my post above that I have started to see it reported but haven't confirmed. Haven't been out with the camera for wildlife. But your caveats are great.

I went bananas in a session when the AF didn’t make sense to me, just to find out that the vertical shutter release is unlocked. Brrrrrr….
Is it possible for Mr. Zamlin to come up with a solution to keep that lock tighter?

I helped a friend set up her Z9 and she was having some odd issues and I forgot that it ships with that unlocked and she had it in her lap as we were setting things up :)

This is one hardware flaw that cannot be fixed via firmware update.
The CF doors are latched up like a submarine before a dive, while the shutter lock is easy to move.

I am really lucky with my carry and use methods about the only time I have accidentally unlocked it has been if in my lap using my vehicle as a rolling blind or moving from one location to another. I have gotten pretty habitual now about checking it when I get out of the vehicle.

Seriously? What makes you think that the vertical shutter lock issue is something that Karl Zemlin, who is simply an independent entrepreneur who makes wonderful custom hoods and lens caps, would have anything to do with solving your vertical shutter lock issues? Gaffers tape is you friend.

My response to the OP's question: the inability of the phase-detect autofocus to acquire initial focus AT ALL in some situations, such as small songbirds in trees. I often have to manually focus because the camera simply can't lock onto anything, and it has caused me to miss more shots than I can count. Admittedly, I haven't been out shooting birds as much since this latest firmware update but I haven't heard that that issue has been fixed. My understanding is it may be a hardware issue with the lack of vertical or cross-type AF points or something, so the camera is bad with horizontal lines. But I'm not the technical type.
