Which would you gift to a Conservation Organization

Eagle shots at a local Conservation Organization. I would like to gift them one print (metal perhaps) for display at club facility.

Are either shots even worthy to gift?

Which do you prefer and why?

LASTLY, please critique both … I am an amateur for over 40 years and need to develop a discerning eye.

Thanks Karen. I do like your crops better. I tried to leave some context in the BIF.

I was trying not to crop any more than necessary seeing I only have 24 Megapixel to start; images equal 64% and 75% respectively of raw data. if those were out of my Z9 I’d have cropped tighter.

At your crops, what max size prints could I get away with?

You have to look at the pixel image dimensions for your images.

For instance: if the dimensions were 2400 x 3000 @ 300 ppi you could print up to 8x10" (divided the pixel dimensions by 300 ppi) without upsizing.

@ 240 ppi you could print slight larger, without losing too much image quality.

FWIW - I use Bay Photo for metal prints. If you are a new customer, you get 25% off your first order. Try to stick to standard sizes.

The corners and edges of metal prints can be extremely sharp. Decide if you are going to frame the print. If not, at least get rounded corners. Just a suggestion.....

I was playing with some numbers and for a 11x14” (preferred ) print, I need 13.8 mp of data at 300 dpi. Thus I can realistically crop by not much more than that for the above D750 images, I.e. crop to 57% of original file. I’m not sure where your crops would fall but expect them to be 50% or more.

Ah, great to know, thank you! They were on my radar from previous threads here. That discount will be needed and welcome.

You can always upsize the images. I don't have experience with that, but I'm sure there are members here who can offer advice. And/or perhaps a place like Bay Photo would up-size the image for you.

I sent Bay Photo the RGB files. They are printing this image for me on metal right now.

AND, other than the crop what brutal factors do I need to know about the processed images?

should this be cross linked to the General photo forum Karen?

And Karen, based on your crops my images come out approximately 8mb & 6.6mb respectively. That would limit me to about 8x10” prints. Really wanted to give them 11x14” or larger print. Oh well, decision time. And thanks for your help.

Agree - if you are going to print consider upscaling .......It's not that hard and you want an image large enough to "demand" attention!

UPscale your image in PS , there are several guides online to show how. easy and works very well.
Thanks for the suggestion Guy. I don’t have PS or LR but I am waiting to hear back from Bay Photo. They are going to evaluate my image and advise what max size I could go native and also about them upsizing it. I am not aware that I can do upsizing in DxO 5 which is my editor.

Bay Photo is great, they make it work.

I will be honest, but it's just one person's opinion so take it with a grain of salt. First image I find the branches distracting and body position a bit awkward. Second image I love the dynamic of the eagle, body and wing position is perfect, but I find the plain blue sky background too dull. So if these were mine I would not print either one, though if you think they would like one then the second is definitely the stronger of the two.

Also if they have other images up, best to match the display method. This means I would not order a metal print unless they have other metal prints already displayed. (Personally I don't care for the look of metal prints at all, though I appear to be in the minority on this one.)

Thank you very much Fred. I do appreciate your feedback!

Can’t disagree with you here. They do want an eagle print so I went with the action shots; but it is difficult in picking between the consolation entries! Backgrounds were busy, boring or both as you see. lol. The launch pic at least has some context that they can identify with as they know that perch tree well.

They have some framed lithographs but no photographs in the club. I forgot to look in the shooting range. My thought is perhaps a metal print would be easier to clean/maintain than other types. I really have no experience in this area though.

If the lithographs are all framed similarly, such as a simple black frame, then I would match that. A standard frame with glass, which can be cleaned with Windex, is easier to maintain and clean than a metal print I would think. Could also be less expensive for you because you can order a standard print from Bay Photo for much less than a metal print and pick up an inexpensive frame at someplace like Michael's Arts & Crafts.

No frame theme Fred, all stained wood I believe . I think the various prints are run of the mill and came from fundraising banquets such as TU, DU, RGS, RMEF etc. I don’t see that there is room on that wall for any other media anyway.

I may look at a standard print on gatorboard with surface coating. Nothing too fancy as they are common folk.

It would also look like to have two prints side-by-side within a frame. However, that would require a custom mat and frame. BUT - Hobby Lobby has really reasonable prices during their frequent sales..... Just a thought...... Just be sure to get musuem quality glass to prevent fading.

Interesting theme idea, but could make for one huge print and probably pricy. Will consider though, even though I have no experience in “doin“ home framing.
