Electronic shutter

I don't use it myself but search for rolling shutter effect to see if it might affect your shooting. IIRC rolling shutter affect increases with frame rate. It distorts verticals when panning but not sure if there are any other issues. If you are taking static shots close to your subject and/or want a silent exposure it will do that well.

I've used silent shutter a few times shooting hunting ospreys with my Z6. In fact this is my default mode for BIF. I had the camera set to AF-C, release mode Continuous H, AF area mode Wide (S) and Wide (L). Everything worked perfectly. I did not notice anything strange.

Depends on the camera. The a9ii has a fast enough readout that rolling shutter isn't a big deal - I've never had an issue with it anyway. On the other hand, the Z cameras have a slower readout and there is potential for rolling shutter issues with faster moving wings. I typically use the mechanical shutter for BIF with the Zs.

So, Steve: When using your a9ii, do you typically use electronic shutter (vs. mechanical) for BIF and other moving animals? Are there times when you use mechanical, and why?

I don't know if I've ever used the mechanical shutter in the a9ii - the electronic one has never given me an issue, even with fast subjects. The only reason I can see to use the mechanical shutter is for flash photography.
