I can see your point, Niels, but how about this?
The rain drenched grassland is vast so even an elephant looks almost insignificant. He is a bit desolate and has nowhere to go, eve3n though he has come a long way (the space behind). I like it. Different.

I like the hey-key and the composition - I'd try two things, first see if cutting some of the sky out makes it more impactful (1/3rd grass, 1/3rd trees, 1/3rd sky)
Second, that big bush on the right is distracting, it's not washed out enough - try a level adjustment layer and burn it out to match the luminance to match rest of the picture.
Optionally (I'm not sure it would be better or not), see if darkening the elephant just a tiny bit better draws the eye to it - it might work if the bush on the right doesn't stand out so much.

This is really a very creative image - i think a few tiny tweaks can make it awesome.

I really enjoy looking at this photo- the atmosphere is wonderful. The elephant appears to be standing still in the rain, as animals often do, either tolerating it, or enjoying a good rinsing. A little careful tweaking as suggested by FB101 would fine tune it enough to make it awesome as he (she?) said. Then print it as big and wide as possible. I would enjoy seeing it with any adjustments, if you’d like to share it again.

I like the gauzy vibe to the trees and grassland and the high key treatment. The sky doesn't add much so I'd crop it to a 2:1 pano and maybe see how it looks when you level it.

I like the atmosphere but I would have composed it differently, always if possible. The elephant is smaller than the bushy one and the latter attracts more attention becoming almost the main subject. I would have seen it more minimalist by moving everything to the left in order to keep the elephant as the only subject on the right. moreover, the animal is coming out of the image, it almost seems to want to escape from the rain, which can still have its own meaning, but the bush remains a disturbing point. Friend, don't take it like an offense, it's just a different idea from yours. ;)

Someone suggested darkening the elehant...however, the eye is generally drawn to the light in the scene, it's just the way we see. Thus, it might work out better if the bush is darkened and the elephant is left lighter, even a tad bit lighter than it is now. As for cropping I can see this as a pano type of image, I've cropped it to show you what I mean. In cropping it would work out better for this image to leave less room on the right, by the bush, and more room on the left so that the subject has some place "to go" without moving out of the frame. Our eyes and mind are always trying to make sense of what we see, it's automatic and we don't want to see the elephant "hit the wall." I did no editing on your image, just the crop for an example. I love the ethereal feel of this image, nice emotion. Just my thoughts on the subject.
