Exposure compensation

Hard to say. It all depends on how much sky shows in the viewfinder as well as the metering mode used. More sky will automatically reduce light on the shadow areas. I find with my equipment that compensation can be anything from +0.7 to +1.7 using matrix metering. Exposure compensation may be less when using centre-weighted metering and even less with spot metering.

Thank you all for your knowledge. I have been a big fan of your work Steve ever since I started my bird photography a few years ago and am so thankful for your expertise! Yesterday was shooting a Red-headed woodpecker and had a hard time dealing with the background brightness but the shots did get considerably better with a +1 exposure comp. I did forget to try my F1 button set to Spot metering in the excitement.

Join the club - I have buttons programmed for spot and single point AF and forget to use them on occasion. :(

It depends on what colour bird you shoot and the time of day too, I think. Also, is the bright light behind, in front or from the side? The problem is, it is now in the shade, now out in the bright light, then it flies over 5 different background types, so choosing the correct EV can be a nightmare. And then I forget the compensation dialed in. And if your shoot white and greyish- black birds in musical chairs of EV, you are bound to make a mistake somewhere. Through experience, you gain a gutfeel, but nothing beats taking the shot, check out the screen adjust, shoot, check, adjust. But if its take-off and landing, then often I still mess-up.
