I am trying to replace my DK-33 rubber eyepiece with a cupped eyepiece suck as the DK-19 I use on my D5. I cannot find one on the internet.

Is there a replacement?

Steve

Hoodman makes one and there is a version similar to the Hoodman on Ebay also. I have both. I'm on my phone at the moment so can't link or find the info that i used.

Thank you for your reply. I am looking for a round eyepiece that collapses flat, which is what I have had on my last three cameras. Maybe it's time to change if it does the job.

How do you like the Hoodman? Is the one on Ebay the same quality as what Hoodman shows online?

I don't know of any that collapse flat for the Z9. I've never liked those for other cameras because when you put your eye up to it, it collpases flat! ;)

The hood man is great, but the Ebay version is a better fit to the eye and rotates much easier for vertical shooting. The down side for the Ebay version is that the rubber part can be bumped off easily.
The Ebay version:

If I was going to choose, I would probably go the Hoodman simply because I know I am going to knock that rubber off the Ebay version and loose it. Better you buy the one that is sturdier.

Do not waste your money on the JJC eyecup for the Z9. I had mine for 30 minutes in the field and it fell off. Other reviews on amazon mirror this experience. The hoodman is unfortunately not available in Europe.
I am in Australia and it is not available here either. I just purchased direct from Hoodman and they sent it via their delivery service.

I could also order it from the US, but between exchange rate, delivery costs, and customs, I estimate it would cost over 60 euros. At the moment, my rational brain would struggle to justify paying 60 euros for a small piece of moulded rubber. Damn it, I could feed an entire family for 3 minutes on 60 euros. Maybe when financial normality returns, it might be easier to justify.
LOL. Lets hope that financial normality returns.
With freight etc, it cost me US$50.00 so, in AU$ terms that's about a thousand, LOL.

I had exactly the same experience. The JJC eyecup is useless as it falls off easily. I returned mine to Amazon and got a refund. I'm using the Hoodman now and so far it's been fine. It folds back should it not be needed.

I recommend searching YouTube for ”Nikon Z9 Eyecup Hack” by Hudson Henry. He walks through the simple steps to fit the JJC EN-DK29II Large Eye Cup for Nikon z6, Z7, Z6II and Z7II, available on Amazon for $13.99, to the Nikon Z9. It works very well and it’s a fair bit less than the Hoodman alternative.

Yes, and that idea of "his" was actually mine.I discussed it over on FM forums way back 30th December 2021. :giggle:

Nice hack. I've used it with success, but I've had a problem with the rubber falling off when sliding against stuff. Any fix?
I am suprised it comes off that easily as mine hasn't. The only drawback with this "hack" is that it is impossible/very difficult to turn the eye cup 90 degrees for vertical shooting. I don't do much vertical shooting so it's no big deal to just put up with it in eht wrong position.

I was surprised too, as hard as it was to get it on in the first place. I think it must have stretched too much or something as it was an irritating problem on my last trip.

The instructions indicate one has to be very careful to not stretch it too much when putting it on. Mine has never came off, even during almost 2 weeks on safari, in and out of the bag, in and out of vehicle and boats. Have you contacted the manufacturer?

I'm a Hoodman eyecup fanboy! I have a Hoodman eyecup for every digital camera I've ever owned, now including the Z9.

The only unfullfilled want of the Z9 Hoodman eyecup is that it came in a model specifically for user with eyeglasses. Though the Z9 model is touted as for use by those with and without eyeglasses, it is a bit smaller than the other models meant for use with eyeglasses.

Even so, IMO, the Hoodman eyecup is the BOTM (Best On The Market.) Of course, that is just my opinion.

The problem was for the DIY eyecup, not the Zemlin. I decided to go the DIY route as I had a couple extra Z7 eyecups laying around and they were considerably cheaper. Expect I will try again with another one. It certainly did not rotate once installed so I have no idea why I had so much trouble.

Actually my hack turns easily when the need arises…that is, a vertical shot…the trick is to grasp the eyecup with thumb and forefinger of both hands…grasping the eyecup with just the fingers of one hand doesn’t work well.

Here is my experience after a few months of using the Zemlin eye cup:

Thanks to everyone who responded to this topic. I have been using the round eyecup from Nikon on cameras for years and have grown accustomed to them. Not having any luck with that style for my Z9 I have taken the advice of several of you and ordered the Hoodman. Turning it for vertical use will take a bit to get used to but I am sure every time I turn it vertically the Hoodman will remind me to rotate it.

Thanks again,
Steve
