Finally, my lens repair is arriving today

I'll bet I'm not the only one who goes nuts when they can't take pictures because their only lens is being repaired. 6 weeks between shipping and receiving, but there was a wait for parts. Lesson learned: don't carry a heavy telephoto lens (Sony 200-600) around by the camera body! I knew that, but ignored it. I broke a screw and bent the aluminum collar that attaches the lens to the camera body by carrying all the weight by the body, and possibly bumping the lens while doing so. I didn't even want to go birding without my camera because I figured I'd see a great photo op that I couldn't get.

wow! Lesson learned the hard way eh? Hope the repair makes it all perfection again 🙏

My lesson Was that I'd carry the lens & camera at my hip. but holding the lens to stop it swinging.... I didn't realise I was holding the lens with my hand too close to the camera and depressing the release button.....so when I rotated th zoom the lens fell off !! The 2nd time made me think a bit LOL

That's exactly what I was afraid of each time I got a heavy lens on the camera. Or more like: Will the camera flange hold it or deform? Will there be at least some elastic deformation that influences the focus plane?
I'm sorry to hear that you had to do that experiment.
I hope it was not too expensive, but it doesn't sound like a very complicated repair.

$785 including shipping both ways. Even when the lens wobbled a bit on the camera body the focus was still fine... but it sure bugged me, so I sent it in for repair. I first tried unsuccessfully to remove the broken screw, and if I could have removed the screw it would have been an easy fix since I already had a new aluminum mounting ring and a screw I had ordered. So basically, $785 for a tiny screw, or would that be a huge "screw"? o_O

The build quality is getting better nowadays, a few years back, I always check lens mount screws, if any screws come loose, loctite is your friend.

You said you couldn’t take photos because your only lens was being repaired. Interesting. I thought carrying around a heavy lens by the camera body tends to bend the camera’s mount and not the lens mount. But I guess in this case, the lens side mount was the weaker of the two and it gave first.

In any event, it seems there could be two lessens learned. 1) Don’t carry a heavy lens around unsupported, and 2) always have a backup plan. Seems like a good reason/excuse to pick up a 100-400 or better yet, a 600 f/4. Haha
