Formatting deletes all settings.

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

If you have saved your preferred settings on the SD card, once you done shooting, copy those setting to your camera.
That way you have what you want (in case you changed things shooting).
Then format the card.
Then copy your settings to the card.
Rinse and repeat.

In his Z8 setup video on YouTube, he mentions that if you’ve saved your menu settings on your memory card, it’s vital to load those saved settings to the camera before formatting your memory card. Otherwise, they’ll be erased from the memory card during the formatting process.

Could that be what you referred to in your original post?

If so, Mr. Henry did not mean that formatting your memory card erases the settings on your camera.

Hope this helps.
By using “ load and save” will that save the settings to the camera? Sorry for my confusion, but, why then does he say some people save their setting to a separate card??

Saving to a card saves a copy of the settings for safe keeping. It's a backup. It's a copy, so if you ever need to go back to your preferred settings you load them into the camera from the card. For example, if you send your camera to Nikon for repair, they may have to reset the camera. Or, if you make a lot of changes to your settings and decide you like the old ones better, simple load them from the card to the camera and overwrite what it has in its memory.

Saving on a separate card is a way to prevent accidental erasing/formatting.

The process he recommends is:
1. Load saved settings from the memory card to the camera
2. Format the memory card
3. Save settings to the newly formatted memory card

I recommend saving your settings to a card only used for that purpose. That way, you can format any other cards used for your photography without the worry of losing your baseline settings.

SETTINGS
You create all you camera settings IN THE CAMERA using the various menus. The camera holds those settings until you change them - they are NOT saved automatically to a card in your camera. In fact, you can set up your camera settings without a card even being IN the camera.

You can then create a back up copy of your settings on card by going into the menu and saving the settings to a separate card that ideally you will NOT use when shooting. You can label this card as a back up card and store this card so you don't confuse it with the cards you use for shooting. Then if during a shooting session, you change several of your camera settings and want to go back to your original settings, you can take that card with your back up camera settings and load the settings into the camera to erase the changes you made during shooting.

SHOOTING
Once you start photographing images, the images are saved to the CFe/SD cards in slots 1 and 2. Ideally you are NOT using the card that contains your back up camera settings.

After you have copied or moved those images to an external hard drive on your computer, the CFe/SD card(s)can be formatted. That will erase everything on the card - resulting in an empty card for you to use again.

Thanks. How can I save my settings to the SD slot and card, as I have plenty of those?

I watched this video awhile ago. Hudson was quite clear. I think that you have misunderstood his instructions. Formatting the card will only delete the settings ( bin file) that you saved. I’d recommend that you take the card out with the bin file and save it to another spare card.
