He dived about 3 m down past a dead tree trunk into the water to washoff his lunch remains - they nealy always wash after smashing and swallowing their fish. They can do this 5-6 times if you are lucky and you can try and follow them down to the water and back up again to maybe the same perch. Pied KF caught at the moment of impact in the water at Lake Panic, Kruger NP. I like the crystal reflection and splash and the fact that the KF's body is still recognizable. I like it. The splash of the impact and the wing give a great reflection. Would be interested in seeing any prior shots to add to the story.
Thanks Peter, appreciated. I have, but still in the oven, not looked at since Feb this year. There were a few; here is one from another location, as he is coming out of the water. Needs some rework.

To me, the second one is a more cohesive photo. The splash in the first one is very cool but the bird seems a bit plunked down into the background without being part of it. The second one shows the KF as being intimately connected with it’s environment, very much connected with the water. Maybe my description is not great, it’s a very subtle thing, but this was my first feeling from the two photos. I would love to see the second one after you work on it. Jm2c

Callie, I like the first one with the well-timed splash. You do not need to see the whole bird as you have that splash and the wing/reflection connecting. It is the action/impact and catching the initial splash that hasn't really dispersed yet that makes the shot for me.

Callie, as a stand alone photo it does nothing for me, because I cannot make out enough of the bird to recognise it. Even with a caption to tell me what it is I would still be underwhelmed. However, as Oztours stated, if that shot was part of a series then you're talking. Get a few together and you're on to a winner because you'd have a story and a recognisable subject. I'll watch this space with interest! Cheers!

Agreed. My view is, if this was my image, would I want to print and hang it on a wall by itself? If yes, then I'd have to be prepared to constantly explain to all viewers what exactly they're looking at. It could be problematic, but at the same time might be a good thing if one wants to use it as a conversation piece, a "guess what this is?" kind of scenario.

Hanging it together with before and after images as part of a sequence would require no explanations, so that would be better to let the images speak for themselves.
