Has anyone hear of Rawsie

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I just read a brief introduction about this new software that takes your Raw files and reduces them in size to save storage space. Apparently it doesn't alter your original file but through the magic of technology can greatly reduce file size and save huge amounts of storage space. I was wondering if anyone is presently was using this software, but more importantly is there a downside to this product.

Nowhere do they say it is lossless and the statement “raw files at jpg size” at least raises questions on how they’d achieve that without a lossy algorithm. They claim it doesn’t hurt shadows and doesn’t hurt details or colors etc... but nowhere do they specifically say the algorithm is lossless. Whether you are ok with lossy compression is up to you. I can see that a wedding pro might want to use this once he is done with a client and is archiving files.

Looks interesting. The video says it removes data that is 'truly random' related to quantum physics and that makes me think of shot noise, but they don't tell the exact source of the 'truly random.' I know canon has a full resolution compressed raw already, and I can't tell the difference between compressed raw and regular raw, though I still use regular raw since storage is cheap. I imagine Nikon has compressed raw? They claim it will speed up Lightroom catalogs, but that makes no sense to me since Lightroom does not store the image file in the catalog. Looks like Mac only.

Thanks everyone I think that I will also stay the coarse. Maybe this software will earn it's place in time but I don't need to be the first to test something new when my drives are all working well. Thank you again for your input.
