This male northern Cardinal is losing all of his feathers on his head.

There are lots of cause, from mites to nutrition, though feather loss) is typically the result of disease. This include infections from viruses (such as psittacine beak and feather disease virus and polyoma virus), bacteria (such as a Staphylococcus ), and parasites (such as a Giardia in cockatiels), or other internal diseases (such as liver or kidney disease).

If he gets worse and can't fly, catch him and call your local wildlife rehab facility. My guess is he just did an extreme molt. Had one in my yard that looked like that around the face, and he's gorgeous now.

I’ve seen this occasionally in the cardinals in my yard. The affected birds seem to feed just as aggressively and are apparently OK after a while.
