Male Common Blue Butterfly resting on a grass seed head. The coastal fringe here between the stony beach and the interior agricultural land is full of natural grasses, herbs and wild flowers, and is a protected nature reserve-- consequentially there are good numbers of butterfly species here as this land does not have pesticides or herbicides applied to it. The Gobbins is the coastal cliff walk which was opened here in 1902 and became more popular worldwide with tourists than the Giant's Causeway. Puffins, Gannets, Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Shag all nest here on the cliffs above the walkway. Although recently refurbished this walk is currently closed due to Covid restrictions ! D5 with Nikon 500mm pf f5.6, ISO800, 1/3200 sec.,handheld. 19/06/20.

Beautiful Design on the wings..
Yes Gordon, and with these Blue butterfly species it is these underside patterns which help to identify them --- fortunately not a problem here in N.Ireland as there are only 3 different species but in Spain with 53 different Blues it can be a nightmare ! With this particular butterfly the colour difference between males (as above) and females (below) is extreme, with the females upperside brown rather than blue -- only apparent here at the wing tips !

The blue butterflies are really cute when you get them close!
Well done!
Thanks Gillholm --- butterfly photography can be so frustrating, and the smaller Blues and Hairstreaks are particularly tricky. Compared to most other wildlife subjects getting a satisfying "keeper" is a rare and wonderful event !

Your image has the quality of a pastel. I wonder if it should have a bit less luminance.
Yes, you may be right Karm, although I quite like the "ethereal" effect . I am often torn between a truly identifiable, contrast, shot (probably derived from my zoological background ) and a bit of artistic licence within a habitat context.

Beautiful...👌👌
Thanks Yezdi --- I was surprised by the quality of this shot, as I only had the D5 with the 500mm pf with me, so it was shot from a distance of approx 4 mtres., and getting a clear, unobstructed line of sight into the grass was touch and go --- still, turned out pretty good for a "close up" !! Undoubtedly, the D5 high frame rate saved the day .
