How many camera bodies?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Photography is my hobby. My primary camera is a Z9. In the past I always had two or more identical or similar cameras (OM-1,2, and 4) since the early 1970's, a primary and backup, most recently 2 D500's. I found the backup really meant backups were never used much. I currently only have one Z mount lens, the 800 6.3. I have numerous F mount lenses that work well enough for me with the FTZ. One D500 is dedicated to a dual laser beam insect photography rig. The second D500 is now my backup. Should the Z9 fail I can just buy another Z9 and have it shipped virtually overnight if needed.

I have a Z9, Z6ii, and a D500 that I still use. I also have two Nikon film cameras and my Nikon D70 tucked away. I tend to use my gear until it really isn't worth that much when selling. I had a D300 and a D7100 as well as a few older F mount lenses that I donated to the school district that I used to teach at. They offer a few classes in basic photography and Photoshop and they could use them to learn the basics.

I was curious on average how many camera bodies do most serious photographers own? I owned only one up until about 12 years ago and have had two ever since. I almost always take two out with me and enjoy doing so. I have considered getting a third mainly because neither of mine do not focus bracketing but keep talking myself out of it lol. I'm sure there are some that own several bodies but I'm curious what the norm is, especially among members on here.
All Nikons: FM (B/W film), D-500, D-850, Zfc, Df, P7800 (pocket camera that shoots RAW). These all have their own "purpose", but I'm also a gearhead.

I only feel I need the one. I have other prior bodies that I haven't bothered to sell. I even have my first Canon FT QL from 1971 or so. But they just sit in a drawer. For the trip of a lifetime I might consider renting a backup, but I'd rather rent a primo lens.

F2 Photonic - my father's and can't bring myself to get rid of it (still take a photo or two once in a while)
F100 - my favorite from film days and can't bring myself to get rid of it
D750 - will get rid of soon
D500 - still using this one for wildlife and sports
Z6ii - I'm trying to claim this is really my wife's but I use it for my theatre photography 90% of the time
Z9 - my main camera

So 3 still used on a regular basis, 1 that I'll be selling soon, and 2 that I'll keep for my kids to throw out.

Two, both A1's. One is mainly for birds with the 200-600 always attached. The other is in a bag with the 14-24, 24-105, and 100-400 for everything else. I think the 600 f/4 is in my near future.

D7200, D500, D800, D850, Z9 + older point and shoot and bridge cameras like the Panasonic Lumix 5mp FZ20, a Casio 26mp Exilim and a Sony 7.2mp Cybershot. Just looking at them bring back memories of the places I used them to capture memories, like trips to Silver $$ City, Disney World and Alaska Cruises. I still have all the images.

Two Z9s. I've owned 14 or so Nikons over the years, but usually sell the old cameras when I upgrade. I purchased my first Nikon, an F4S, in 1991. I wish now I had kept that one as a keepsake.

I’ve heard good things about the XT5 looks like a great camera

My "elevator review" is.... 75% of the wildlife AF of the Big Guys (A1/Z9/R6), 95% of the people AF of the Big Guys. Noise at 6400+ is a stop worse. Everything else is great. Nearly at parity, I'd say. If I had to shoot one system and was primarily a wildlife shooter, I wouldn't choose Fuji X. However, if wildlife were a "side gig" or if I were able to shoot a second system for "critical wildlife", it's a fantastic camera in a compact and fun-to-shoot package. More than I need, but obviously not more than I want. :)

I run two systems right now (Sony and M43) and have 5 total.

Sony A1 and Sony A7c

Oly OM-1, Pany GX9, Pany GX880

Now that I'm starting to travel again and will want comparable backups I'll probably add another OM-1 and/or another higher MP Sony body.

FF: two Z9s
APS-C: XT-4
Cine: FX6
Film: F5
MF: probably this year's investment, a GFX100.

And a whole bunch of impulse cameras I never use (GR3, ZV-1, Hero, others).

I lied, I have more (was only thinking about what I'm using at the moment :) )

So 5 ILCs and 3 P&S

Z50 - Left over from my Nikon days, that body with the 16-50 is a fun setup
Canon M - bought when the M first came out, that pair with the 22 F2 pancake is also a lot of fun
Pany G7 - I had given it to a family member a while ago but they stopped using it and gave it back

I also see people listing their P&S
Sony TX20 (tiny waterproof camera)
Oly TG-6
Sony ZV-1 (actually got this one free)

3 currently but only because I haven't sold my D7500 yet…Z9 and Z7II…and depending on when/what the Z8 or Z7III or whatever whenever its comes has I might swap the Z7II for one of those.

And to answer the question about how many on a trip…I carry the Z7II as a spare ten though it's not the same as the Z9 because some body is better than none…but it stays in the car/hotel most of the time unless I choose to carry it for walking around the city rather than the Z9 for size/weight.

I have three but I could live with two.
