How many lenses do you have?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I’m just curious how many camera lenses most people have. I have 9 and 2-3 of them I hardly ever use. I’ve thought of getting rid of a couple but fear I’ll regret doing so. I would say I have 5 that I shoot with quiet frequently. I have two 24-70 lenses and definitely need to sell one of those. Perhaps this is common among all of us but I was just curious the number of lenses most of us have.
I don’t think 9 is too many. I feel like I’ve kept my Nikon kit relatively small and have 8 myself, counting two 24-70mm lenses. The reason I have two 24-70mm is so one can be shooting video while the other photos. I have the S 14-30mm F/4, S 24-70mm F/4 (x2), 70-300mm AF-P, 200-500mm F/5.6, 500mm PF, S 50mm F1.8, and 24mm PC. This works covers me pretty well for everything from landscape to wildlife. I will probably trade the 200-500mm for the Z 200-600mm when it comes out. I also want to add the 105mm Micro.

I have 7 left for Fujifilm, but will be getting rid of a couple more, like the 80mm macro once I get the Nikon replacement.

Is this a trick question? I've moved from SLRs, to DSLRs, and now to MSLRs, all I have is 1 lens—right—after all the S is for SINGLE LR camera etc.

JUST Kidding: 4 lenses, a set of rings (extension tubes) and a 1.4x .

Looking, perhaps, for a 14-24 (to replace my beloved 16-35).

I own fewer since moving from Sony A-mount to E-mount, but here's what I have now: 12-24f4, 24-105, 100-400, 200-600, 35f1.8, 55f1.8, 85f1.4, 135f1.8 and three a-mount: 16f2.8 fisheye, 105f2.8 macro, 135 STF. Looks like 10. One of these days I'll probably find an irresistible deal on Minolta 100f2 and 200f2.8 and I'll get them once more.

I have 11 but 4 are in the process of being sold and I'm seeking one more, so 8 (have and keeping 600 f/4, 100-400 f/4-5.6, 90 macro 2,8, 35 1.4, 16-35 f/4, 24-70 f/4, 45 1.8. Seeking 135 1.8)

This actually is a good outline to present myself more with desires than haves, so you are stuck with both. Nothing too exciting, but happy with my selection for what I do.

F mount: 600 f4 G, 300 f2.8, TC1.4III, TC2.0III
Z mount: 70-200 f2.8, 24-70 f4, 50 f1.8, TC2.0x

Backorder: Z mount- MC 105 f2.8

Want: Z mount 85 f1.8, 24-70 f2.8,

Long term want: Z mount Supertelephoto Prime.

Too many :) I've been doing this for a long time. It's complicated, though (as most things are). I have a bunch of older lenses that I'd get rather little for in resale but that have occasional utility. 17, 55, and 300f2.8 manual focus for example. 20, 24, and 35mm AF-D lenses that are small and light and just the thing for dropping in your pocket (I wish Nikon would make more modern versions of these lenses). I have usual list of of suspects for FX, DX, Z, CX, and Olympus. But every time I go through them I can't figure out which to get rid of....

I tend to purchase a lens with a specific use in mind, often a specific trip or location.

The temptation is always there to do the Marie Kondo bit. I have sold some (I sold the 200-500. Twice. The 500 f4, 80-400 (both versions). 400 f3.5 and 500 f4P. etc) and there are relatively few functional overlaps remaining (aperture, weight/size, and zoom range a differentiators) But if I still have scenarios I anticipate where the lens would be still useful, I keep it.

I have just the Two now - 300PF and AF-P 18-55 and my mark 3 1.4X TC, but I have owned (ready for this) -

Zorki 4 50mm, Zenith 50mm, Chinon 50mm, Ricoh 28-70mm, Canon 50mm FD, Sigma UC set of 28-70mm/70-210mm, Minolta 70-zoom, Nikon 18-70mm, Canon 55-250STM, Nikon AFS 70-300, Sigma 70-300, Tamron 70-300VC, Nikon 300AFD (screw drive) Sigma 100-300, Tamron 100-400.

Newer Nikon: 20, 50, 16-35, 24-120, 70-200, 200-500
Legacy manual Nikkor: 55 micro, 105, 200

All but the 50mm autofocus lenses see regular use. The old 55mm 3.5 micro gets used a lot for product/tabletop photos. The 105 and 200 I haven't touched in years.

I’ve just finished counting.... scared myself. Between us we have a fair pool of gear to draw on.

I need to start using my 20mm more often. It is a good lens but I tend to grab the 14-30 more often.

Dang, you practically have a store lol. After hearing all these replies, I feel much better about my situation. I’m probably done for a while but would like a z mount large telephoto if they ever release it. It’s a high bar to overcome the 500mm pf especially with the weight.

It is quite normal to have a few lenses due to:
- the variety of photography genre (wildlife, landscape, portrait, macro, street, to name a few)
- the situation (travel light weight, Safari double gear to avoid dust, car or Hide where weight is less of an issue)
- different camera brands or even mounts (F and Z for example).

I assess the gear I use on yearly basis and have a simple way of deciding which stays and which goes on sale (no point in collecting dust). I have two shelves, the gear that I use regularly is in the upper shelf. The gear that doesn't get used within a year goes in the bottom shelf. If one more year goes by, without it moving up the the top shelf, then it goes on sale.

Now that I have a Z50 and I am thinking of complementing it with a Z5/Z6.. this task became all more important, as income from sales will contribute to the budget (money doesn't grow on trees).

@sh1209 - "I'm probably done for a while" is a sentence I said way too many times before buying the next thing.. 😅

8 lenses in mFT mount (mostly Olympus lenses even though I use Panasonic bodies).
7 lenses in Nikon F mount.

More interestingly is that I have subsets of lenses paired with different cameras, for example, the 5 mFT primes I have, I usually use them with a Panasonic GX-7 as they are all small and light, while the zooms go with the G9.

The 300mm f4 and TC14 stay mostly on the D500 while the Nikon F zooms, macro lens and Samyang 135mm f2.0 are used mostly with the D810.

Add to that 3 Nikon F to m43 adapters (standard dumb-one, smart AF one, SpeedBooster clone).

Oh, and one lens in Pentax K mount.

May I ask what MFT lenses do you use

I bow in awe :)

We need to make sure that our wives are not allowed to see this thread ! All it will lead to is more trouble for some of us.

All I wiil admit to is that I have two lenses that I cannot use or sell because of sticky aperture blades or fungus. I recently sold my two DX lenses in an attempt to reduce my lens inventory to just FX lenses.

Everytime I think about selling some of my FX lenses I do not use very often I think back to the memories associated with some of them.

Everyone needs a macro lens, even a short one like 50 or 60mm. They make excellent portrait lenses and landscape lenses. Maybe I will sell my standard 50mm lensand just keep my macro?
