Hummers -- Share Your Hummingbird Images

Hummers that visit us are mostly the Black-chinned with some Ruby-throated.
I'll have a modified feeder out that positions the hummers at only one of the feeder ports. I shoot from inside a pop-up blind positioned about 10-12 ft away from the feeder. Freeze-frame hummer photos done with 2-3 shoe flashes w. radio triggers. 1 flash each side of the feeder and another on background.

Very nice Doug, hummer season has passed this year for us so it's nice to see these images in the cold of winter :)

For the sake of adding some exotic variety, here are a few from Costa Rica made in December 2012. This was before I had some serious lenses and while still very much a rookie about shooting birds like these. Many of the Costa Rican hummers are much larger than the ones we're used to in North America. These guys were so tame that they allowed me to get this close with a 200mm lens.

I made these with a Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 lens. I used flash with a low shutter speed of 1/60 sec, F/9.

“Dig in” . Glittering-bellied emerald. Buenos Aires, Argentina. These hummingbirds are very active , moving up and down and sideways continuously . They spend a brief time in each flower. Nikon D7200 @ 1/750. ISO 1400. Nikon 500mmF4. Fill in flash. If the image is less than sharp is due to downsizing. Original image is sharp.

Love the way the head is sharp and everything else is blurred. Draws attention to what's most important.

Velvet-purple coronet. Back and front images of this beautiful bird. Reserve Dos Corazones, Ecuador. What a place to see and photograph hummingbirds ( They are like flies!). Close to the Mindo area. Nikon D7200. Nikon 500mm F4 lens. A touch of flash.

Sword-billed hummingbird. Zuro Loma reserve, Ecuador. Nikon Z6 II @ 1/350 sec. ISO 560. Nikon 500mm F4 @4.8. Briefly edited with Darktable. Sorry I left so little space below the tail , I was trying hard to fit the bill in the frame. I am going back next month for a second chance.
