Image review on Nikon D810

When shooting with my D810 lately I can't change my settings quickly from one shot to the next. I may be getting senile but I think this has happened only recently. Have I accidentally changed a setting?

In trying to figure it out, I learned that if I turned Image Review off I could immediately change the settings. I guess this is better because not having Image Review on all the time would save battery.

My D810 has the image review on most of the time. To quickly change settings between shots, I give the shutter button a half press which clears the image. I'm using BBF so it does not refocus.
