Is the Telephone pole to much / over barring in this photo?

First, this is a really nice photo of a Red-tail. As to your question about the power pole, yeah, it's a major distraction. But they always are. Photographing birds on power poles is always hard. I don't know if I've ever gotten one that is really amazingly good. Sometimes, if it's just the crossbar it isn't too bad, but it's just not an ideal situation for photographing raptors, which is frustrating because they do love to sit on those poles. :) At least you got the whole bird in and I do like that talon peeking over the crossbar. You did the best you could with what you had to work with.

From my point of view, the answer to your question is yes. But it depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you are looking for a record shot of the hawk, “I was there” then it’s fine, especially the vertical version. But if you want an artistic interpretation of the bird in nature, then for me, no amount of telephone pole, or anything else man made, would be acceptable. I reject, or don’t even try to get a picture if there are man made objects in the view. Obviously this is just my opinion, no offense intended.

Exactly.

For nature shots I tend not to shoot birds on manmade objects. But I've written photo/story packages about birds in particular environments or bird watching articles where I've intentionally included shots of birds on power lines, wire fences or things like Osprey on artificial nesting platforms. IOW, shots like that can work real well to help tell a story where the manmade object is part of that story. But generally speaking for standalone wall prints I wouldn't use shots with manmade objects.

You all have great advice thank you for your input. The location this was taken near Klamath Fall OR. has lots of different raptors. The only problem there's nothing tall that's not man made for miles.
