Is there a forum in which to post sports, portraits, street photography, etc?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

The trouble with that is that everyone joining here is joining for good reason. They all like @Steve and his approach to photography. I for one, wouldn't complain if we had one more "Presentation" section for "Unrelated Photography".

^^ Exactly this.

I work on a fair few aviation and military projects and there's a good bit of overlap with wildlife techniques :)

My gut feeling is that the existing forums already keep Steve and his wife as busy as heck. Adding more forums requires more managing and oversight.
I also subscribe to Nikonians, where there are many different forums like wildlife, studio, macro, landscape, sports , motor sports, aviation, travel, glamour, etc. Each of those forums has a moderator, so I imagine Nikonians has many more folks involved in managing the group on a day to day basis than what Steve can do currently. As far as I know, the folks who started Nikonians, while very capable photographers, are not professional photographers who still have to make a daily living from their photography as well.

The focus of Backcountry Gallery has been nature photography from the beginning since that is what Steve does for a living. Personally I'm quite happy with the forum focus as it is right now.

I like that this is a wildlife forum for the most part. There are many other forums out there for other subjects. I like the wildlife expertise on this forum and most of the photographers on this site obviously have a great deal of good experience with photographing wildlife: I appreciate that experience.

Had some discussion with Steve back in 2020, he confirmed that it's fine to post non-wildlife images and he was considering an "other images" area at some stage.

Possibly an outlier here but I've never shot a wildlife image but I do appreciate the skill that you guys demonstrate:), there are a range of non wildlife subjects that utlilise similar techniques and the lessons in Steve's books and videos apply to most action photography scenarios.

add landscapes and macro -

There is a Landscape Presentation portion, maybe not a forum, but that could also serve as a forum I suppose...post a shot and discuss it? Hardly anyone posts in the already there Post Processing section and that, too, could be used for a discussion on landscape processing as it is not confined to one subject.

I shoot more sports than wildlife but have improved my skills reading Steve’s books and by becoming a Supporting Member. Many of Steve’s techniques and tips for photographing birds in flight can be applied in sports so I agree with those who want a Sports/Action section. Same for landscape, portrait, etc. These additional areas will serve to help people zero in on their particular interest. If we are here to assist and support one another we should be inclusive rather than exclusive.

Could those of you against this please explain why adding an "Other" forum would negatively affect you? I don't see how one extra option on the menu that you never go to would impact you at all. What am I missing? The people that want it could go to that forum and everyone that doesn't wouldn't go to it. Otherwise this forum would be exactly the same. Help me understand your thinking.

I would welcome a junk room for other types of photography. While I do wildlife the most I do other types as well. I hardly ever go to FM anymore which is the only other forum I belong to as I like the group here and am happy to do my small part in keeping this forum alive.

I think it would dilute this site into just another "one size fits all" forum.
It would create more work for Steve. More moderators would almost certainly be required.
More moderators would lessen the amount of control in the hands of Steve.
Just an answer to your question from a guy who has been known to be wrong a time or two.

One extra forum. Not like it would be a massive site. Easy to ignore if you aren’t interested. Still don’t see the problem.

Can't ignore it the way most forum users (all forums) go into the forum by clicking What's New.

This is @Steve 's forum, not members' or some corporation. It's not supported by ads like most forums. It's an extension of his publications, YouTube and tours and most of us are here for that specialization.
