Latest And Popular Image Galleries

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

As some of you may have noticed, a couple of new menu items have appeared under the main Forums menu at the top of the page - Latest Images and Popular Images.

This is a new image-browsing gallery I had made for the forum that should make it better for both those who are viewing photos and those posting them. :)

For those viewing the photos, when you click the link, it will give you a gallery page with all of the most recent or most popular images from the last seven days, depending on which link you click (it shows images from all the presentation forums on a single page). This is far faster and easier than individually clicking on each post to see what's there (of course, you can still do that as well).

If you see an image you like, click it, and a pop-up window will appear with the thread for that image. Note that only the first image from the thread will show in the gallery, so again, if you like what you see, click the image as there may be even more to enjoy! Make sure you comment and like your favorites, of course. Once you're done with a post / image, press the "X" in the upper right corner to go back to the gallery page.

If you're posting images, this should drive more traffic to your photos. Often new posts can get buried and go unnoticed. The images in the "Latest Images" gallery are always in the order they are posted, so even if your thread gets pushed down right away, your photos still have a chance to get plenty of attention. :)

During testing, I found that using these galleries is a very fast and efficient way to browse the photos on the presentation forums. It's way easier to get to the threads you want and I think it's more enjoyable too. I find myself looking through the images far more than I did before, simply because it's so convenient to do so.

Also, regarding the Popular Images page - the images in that gallery are based on likes. So, if you're posting more than a single image in your thread, make sure you put your best photo first so it gets the most attention in the "Latest Images" gallery. As users, if you see an image you like, make sure to hit the "like" button to help the poster rank higher in the Popular Images gallery (even if you post a comment - comments aren't counted towards "popular" at this time.)

Let me know what you think or if you have any questions. I'm cross-posting this in all the presentation forums.

Great idea because it is not always easy not to miss new threads with good photos. With this solution, we see immediately the new photos published and it is very good. The same for the most liked photographs. BRAVO ! (y)

At first I responded in the Macro forum by accident, but since this is the forum I spend most of my time in, I'll post here too.

I really like the idea of the "latest Images" forum. That way each person posting gets their images seen, and it may encourage new members to post images.

Not so sure about the "most popular" yet. Seems like it could become a de facto competition and I could see it making new photographers a bit shy about posting. Please hold the flames, it's just my opinion.

Hopefully that's not what will happen. Also, the system only looks at the last seven days from the current day. So, it's not really the most popular image for something like the week of the 1st, it's the most popular in the last seven days and it rolls all the time as older images fall off and new ones pop up.

That makes sense. So one image or a series of images can't just stay on top, they drop off after a week. Thanks for explaining.

Did you really have to pay for a bespoke solution or did you purchase a feature like their media gallery? Either way, your investment in these forums is appreciated!

No, I couldn't find anything that was exactly what I wanted. I always try finding plug-ins first, but if I can't find what I want, I pay a developer for it. I had to pay for custom development for this and the EXIF info plug-ins. It was pricy, but I think it will be worth it long-term since it will hopefully make people want to spend more time at the forum.

Actually, it's even better - they'll drop off the moment it's been a week. It's down to the minute. :)
@Steve ... Woe, my anhinga in "Is there anyone there?" is going to disappear from first place all of a sudden

I’m just kidding, it’s a great way to operate ;)

A question related to the operation of the site... unless I am mistaken, the WOW and SAD are not counted in the Reaction Score. Yet these are reactions to images, especially the WOW. Is there a particular reason to not count them please?

Can anyone explain how one reacts to an image? I see the like button, but where are the other choices?

I sort of thought they were included. I'll ask the developer about it since they should be added to the reaction score for the image.

Update - I was just looking at the image in spot 2 and 3 and, currently, the third spot has more likes than the third, but the second spot has a better overall score with the other reactions included. So, I think it's working. Again, I'll verify it, but I think it's OK.

Just mouse over "Like" without clicking and the other smileys appear (this is the way it works for me in Safari)

I don't usually view with a mouse, usually on a tablet or phone when visiting here. Now I see if I long press the like I get more options. Who knew? Apparently everyone but me.

That's odd - I just tried it on my iPhone and just putting my finger on the "like" button popped up the other options. Note that I'm 99% sure the options are all weighted the same, so a like is as good as a wow :)

Actually my question was about the counter "Reaction received" in the account and not in the "Popular images" section. But both are worth checking out.

Regarding "Reaction received", example using my account where we can see that : All = Like + Love + Haha + Wow + Sad :

But when we look at this, we only have Like + Love + Haha taken into account :
