I love my Nikkor 200-500 zoom, but the thing is NOT a "walk-around" or hiking lens!

I am planning to order the Nikon 300mm f/4E AF-S PF ED VR soon. I already have a TC 1.4 III and I am looking for a good lens collar to mount the camera and lens to my Monopod or Tripod when necessary.

Any comments or suggestions about the lens or a lens collar (Arca style)??

Thank you in advance for your comments and suggestions.

I have an iShoot collar which fits both my 70-200mm f/4 and my 300mm f/4 PF. Much cheaper and does the job well.

I believe that the 300pf takes the same collar as the 70-200 f/4.
Correct, the 300mm PF and 70-200mm f/4 use the same collar.

FWIW, I'd say a tripod collar is optional for the 300mm f/4. First the lens is so light I usually use it as a handheld lens but if you do need to mount it on a tripod the lens is so small and light I usually just mount the camera, after all the 300mm PF is lighter and about the same size as the 24-70mm f/2.8 which doesn't even offer a tripod collar. That said, I have the 70-200mm f/4 with its own collar and if I really want to tripod mount the lens itself I'll just swap on that collar.

I have the 70-200 f/4 and the 300 PF. I think I have used the lens collar on them only once or twice. Both are so hand-holdable I don’t even carry it any more.

If everyone thinks that mounting just the camera to the tripod is safe for the camera, that's probably the best solution for the few times I would mount it. Thanks for the input. Now I need to order the lens and figure out how to get it into the house without the boss finding out!!

My main use of the collar to fit a sling. I modified a Haoge LMR-N372 with a capbolt to attach PD clips, for which I drilled across he bolt head to take a split-ring. Secure with a nylock. 2 extra nuts help balance the rig. All 316 stainless.

(The i-Shoot lens foot also shown below fits the 70-200 f2.8 (also 500 PF) but grind off the sharp point of the release-lever)

I have an iShoot collar which fits both my 70-200mm f/4 and my 300mm f/4 PF. Much cheaper and does the job well.

Hi Andrew, I use the I shoot lens collar also for my 300 pf.
If I didn’t know any better I would have paid a lot more for it , used it well over a year now. Great value I have no complaints at all.

I use the iShoot collar primarily so I can carry the camera/lens on a sling, too. I put a Kirk QD plate on the iShoot collar plate to be able to do this. The Kirk plate's longer length is better, too, when you do use it on a tripod.
