Well the 500 PF head is a big improvement on the flimsy hood of the 300 PF, which is easy to lose in scrub etc. I find the hood on my 500 PF has to be clipped on securely in the correct position, otherwise it will drop off. No problem to unclip on my copy. The similar designed latched hood of the 70-200 f2.8E is much more secure
Dread to think what this piece of plastic costs to replace - Nikon USA lists the 400 f2.8E carbon fibre-resin hood at a bracing $1000+ !
